Her mom's hand-me-down 2003 G35 sport...a fun car, but she is looking at having to buy her own fuel.

Another vote for a Civic SI, or Accord V6 coupe. Both decently fun, decently practical vehicles. Or, another S and a set of winter tires and a hardtop. That would work, too.

I'd buy nothing but a Honda but I'm a Honda girl. Loyal like that. I am going to check out what the '08 Hondas do for me to replace my '98 Odyssey van with.

If you are attached to the dub you might point out that v6 equipped vw's don't have the best reputation for reliability. If your daughter packs a full set of tools in the trunk and knows how to troubleshoot this might not be much of a deterant, of course.
One of the most enjoyable cars I have ever owned was a 1999 Civic Si. If you could find a 2000 version with low mileage it could be a strong contender. .....

Our 02 Passat (auto/turbo4) was the biggest lemon that we have owned since our 86 Dodge Carvan Kathy was sooooooooo happy to trade it on our Prius.....got 10k for it
I also like the Honda Civic suggestion (but don't tell Rob that I agreed with anything he recommended )
Oh, how about a Mini S.....another roller skate in the S tradition

I just turned in my Pilot on a lease and got a Civic Coupe EX 5 speed. My thought was that my son would get this when he went off to college in 3 years, but I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I like the car. The gas mileage, the build quality, the anemeties, and the fun to drive factor all at about 18K.

My nephew just bought a Subaru WRX...my bro says it's black and fast!

Do I sense a lot of brand loyalty here?
What price range are you looking at? What features - all wheel drive, best mileage, best handling, etc.?

I got rid of my gas hog pickup and bought a 01 Civic with a manual trany. Managed over 40mpg with the air on. It has quite a bit of power unless you've got a full load of people on board. Might not be quick enough for you, but thats what I've got the S for.

Catherine, do you WANT a new car? Is your daughter simply looking for a used car that she knows the history, therefore Mom's car "fits the bill"?
If you want a new car, then sell her your VW, if not, I'd go with the suggestion of finding a good used Civic. People here swear by them.
On the other hand, if you do sell her the VW, what would YOU like to drive, when it's not Tachus weather, of course.
