Just curious....can't imagine that they need any material things? Often the checks would come in the other direction

Not me. I use Bizrate.com and they don't have it anywhere for that inexpensive.

Perhaps some of the more affluent retirees don't need the extra cash. Some do. We always give my Mom cash for birthdays, Christmas, etc. She uses the extra cash to enjoy herself on senior citizen trips, etc.

I ALWAYS give my mom a check for any special occasion. I look forward to the time when that's what my kids do for me.

Well, I gave up trying to buy things as they either already have or don't really need. It is easier this way as they can buy or spend as they wish. They do the same for us too. It's kind of funny with checks exchanging.

Our three kids want cash, so they can do their own shopping for things like furniture or vacations. The older grandkids get a credit card number and a limit to shop for themselves on the internet. Their parents want cash cards or cash to shop for the younger grandkids. My Dad always wants something red to wear or restaurant gift cards. My sister always wants something she wouldn't buy herself. We have never exchanged gifts; we prefer a joint plurge. This year that was a black on black Honda Accord Coupe V6 Auto.

There was a piece on NPR this morning about the excesses of consumption....where will the "America Model" end

A couple snippets that I remember:

*a woman who had 160 pairs of shoes
*report about a (Brit?) store called H&R (or similar) that is expanding around the world; they sell clothing that is so trendy.....that it's sold out at the end of the day; and out-of-style by the next day. Young people actually BUY this stuff
*addicted shoppers line up an hour or two before the H&R store opens at 9 or 10 am.....just to be able to spend the euros/dollars before anyone else

I'll take another year, and maybe a carbon fiber air box cover if they ever start making them again.
