UC Santa Barbara....Fees were $91 a quarter in 1967 and a year's room and board in San Miguel Hall was $900 something.

Here's my contribution to the "bargains of the past" contest. I attended grad school at the University of Texas for three years from '82 to '84. As a Texas resident, I paid $4 (yes, four dollars) per credit hour, and only $150 in fees and expenses per semester. The costs were heavily subsidized by oil and gas revenues from the 2 million (yes, two million) acres of land owned by the university system trust. Of course, those costs have since gone up, I'm no longer a Texas resident, and neither of my kids has any interest in attending UT. It was good while it lasted and the football games were outstanding.

I went to Northeastern University in Boston. My father was a dean so tuition was free. Since they have a co-op program, the money I earned allowed me to buy a new car ('68 Roadrunner) and pay for an apartment.

Even if I had to pay tuition, I'm a big fan of the co-op plan. I had almost two years of work experience before I graduated.

My Dad got his PhD at Cornell and I remember living there as a very young kid. We used to go to Flat Rocks in the summer. Anyone know about that place?

I just found my Samuelson Economics, third edition, in the basement. I bought it used in 1969 for $3.50 (the bookstore price tag is still on). I think it was $4.50 new.

I think the current edition is about $50 used today.

I majored in Economics. As a matter of fact, it was the only subject I liked, so I have a shelf full of out of date eco textbooks. Want some? Good ballast for your S in the winter.

We have been saving for both boys college for a very long time. We've mostly done pretty well with the investments. Most of the college money is in conservative investments.

Right now my older one is fighting sophmore slump in high school. He'll get through this, of course, but like always, its tough being a teenager.
