Today I am a CPA with a specialty in IT. I am in charge of the 17 member network in my office and am the computer specialist for my firm. Of course my point of view is the number crunching, accounting side of it, and my favorite area is software.
Rob~

I have a question for you about software, if you can discuss it. What software do you use for 706s and 709s? The vendor we use has been bought out and we're not happy about the new product.

Thanks!

if your hardware can handle Windows XP than you will most likely not have to worry about drivers. Windows XP is awfully inexpensive now too compared to the $299.00 retail price when it made its debut back in 2002.
I don't think my old hardware can handle XP. I have a 350 mhz PII machine. I don't think the processor meets the software requirements.

Great thread, TC, especially for us non-techies. My new computer runs Windows XP. One feature allows someone else (any techie) to have remote access to my computer. I would love to have someone I know (and trust) come in and have a look at what I'm trying to do, once I figure out what that is. I haven't tried it yet but does anyone know how hard it is to set up? How dangerous it is (thinking hackers)? Or what it involves? I think here at work it's called "help desk takes control" but I thought that was just office specific. Any input will be appreciated since there are no hard copy manuals. I'm finding stuff by accident when I have time.

Granny, I'm planning to get a Windows XP for dummies book so I can figure out stuff like that. I find them very helpful. I just can't remember all the capabilities that Windows has and I find the help feature to be a pain. Sometimes the Help screen gives a bunch of steps that I can't remember. Sometimes I am not asking the question or listing the topic the way the help feature recognizes it. In the end, I like having a book written in simple terms.

Let me know if that helps, LB. I'm trying not to give up just yet and send the thing back. I try to remember that I'm coming off a 13-yr-old computer. Technology has changed a bit, ya think?

My first computer was a Commodore 64 (my dad's, actually). I remember booting it up, going downstairs to microwave some hot chocolate, and then coming back to see the computer just finishing its boot sequence!

When in college and working for IBM, there were rumors of a screaming-fast 100Mhz computer being developed in Boca Raton--crazy, crazy technology...

Now one of my friends is taking a fanless ITX board, hard drive, DVD player, and hooking it up to a 7" touch-screen, installed in his 350Z! He's adding GPS, 802.11g, wireless keyboard, and WiFi (hooked up to his cell phone).

Sound like fun?

Here's something you guys can help me with. Everytime I turn my old computer (which I'm keeping in service) off and back on, a porn site comes up in a window with graphic detail. I have children using that computer and even though I send it to the recycle every time, it still pops up if I have to restart it while they're there. Anyway to get rid of it once and for all? Any idea how it got there? Sounds like a virus that somehow got in by the back door.

Edit: I never visit porn sites.

jmc1971, you asked Rob, but I will chime in too. I use Lacerte Software (owned by Intuit) for basically all returns- 1040s through 706's and 709's. Have always found them to be on top of things. They are the only ones (in my experience) that tell you when there's a problem and when they will have the fix, which is always right away. Others (like the big Bill company) sweep it under the rug till people trip and then scream.

Thanks, Morris. I shoulda remembered you could answer that, too.

I'll have to check into Lacerte--especially since they provide good support.

Ugh. Sounds like you (or someone) installed something nasty on that machine, Angela. Is it coming up in the internet explorer window, or it coming up some other way? How do you send it to the recycle bin?

I would probably reload that system if I were you, but it may yet be salvageable.
