Default Corvettes, new and old

When I was a kid I always drooled after Vettes. I emember watching Rt 66 just to see the Vette. I remember the year he got a new Vette in the show and I thought he was so lucky to be able to get the current model (Like Buzz really existed). Over the years I had my favorites, like the 1964 convertible in Nassau Blue, or the 1967 427 cu in, 427 hp aluminum block monster (very few ever made). Then in the mid 70s, things got bad. As I approached a stage in life where I could buy a late model used car, the Vettes had no appeal. Even though the early Stingrays were very exciting, the cars from 1974 to 1982 depressed me and kind of spoiled the entire Stingray run for me. It wasn't till the C4 came out that I was attracted to them again.

As I got older, I looked at Vettes a few times. I almost bought a 1986 C4 and I almost bought a 1998 C5. But I didn't. Even today I sometimes read the adds for the classic Vettes of my youth, but somthing about the skinny wheels and lack of fender well space for bigger rubber has kept me away from those favorites of my youth.

This month, Road and Track did a bang-up job road testing the new C6 convertible and producing an accompanying article filled with cutaway drawings (which I have always loved) and a discussion of the improvments the C6 represents over the C5.

Like always, I think "Maybe someday I'll get one of those" and this time the temptation may be too hard to resist.

What do the rest of you think of Vettes, historic and current?

like you Bill I grew up oogling Vettes. I did own a 1970, 454 , 4 speed Monza red for 7 years till I sold it for the S2000. I absolutley loved it. I also like the current C5 and how could anyone argue with what the new C6 is offering. It seems they did everything the press and owners wanted. I would buy one in a minute..... wait in another year maybe when they flood the market with them and Chevy practically gives them away.

The first time I went over 100 in a car was in my older brother's friend's new 1963 Corvette. What a thrill. I'm right with you on loving the '63-'67, esp. the 427s. Didn't like them in the 70s and 80s but I started liking them again when they went to the current body style. I probably will never own one though. When I took the S on the track I was in 4th gear and still had 2 left at the same speed we hit in the '63 Vette. (not flat out)
Oh, my sister had a black 1960 Vette convertible in the early 70s which was beautiful. She even let me borrow it once to go on a date. Don't remember the date, but I remember looking good in the Vette.

I've always liked them too, my college roomate had a 67 ragtop/hardtop, 4 sp, 427 that was loads of fun. He traded it for a 72 and as far as I know has always owned one. The older ones, along with the c-5's are my favorites. Almost bought a 02 ZO6 but it came down to I didn't want a car that was seen all the time. The new c-6 looks great and is getting rave reviews and has me thinking. Then again I'm completely satisfied with the S, well maybe it could use a supercharger, so I doubt if I'll be changing.

I am Corvette fan also, but like you I was not a fan of the 70s or early 80s models...

Sunday I am competing with the Competition Corvette club autoxing....don't let anyone ever tell you that American cars can't handle...the Z06s that come out are awesome.

I've never really liked Corvettes except for the first few years and the 1963 split window Sting Ray, and then, only because of the styling. There were always other cars that I found much more appealing. By the late 60s I thought that they had lost their way and forgot what a Corvette was. I do like the new Corvettes.

Last Tuesday night the local chapter of the Wanderers had their Tuesday night old car show at the local McDonalds. One of the members showed up with a 1963 Sting Ray Spilt Window. It was black and in near showroom condition. What a beautiful car.

Seventeen being allowed to drive a 69 convertible. 68 Mach 1 pulled along side & the guy who owned the Vette said just go I'll tell you when to shift. I remember shifting through the gears & never getting into fourth, we ran out of straight roads. I was in love.

I owned 1976 & agree those years weren't great but it was the first chance I had to own a Vette that I could afford. I kept it for a few years but the 76 just didn't have the appeal.

I really enjoy the S2000 but I'm not ready to say I won't ever own another Vette.

Over the years there are years and models that really got my attention and then the other years where they just did not do anything for me. Until the C5 came along. Now I can honestly say that I would love to own a Z06. Some of you should be drooling over this 63 split window. I am drooling over this Callaway Corvette serial number 001. I would love having that in my stable if I had one.
