Interesting question Carmen... I've not figured the whole calling hours/service thing yet. I agree though, it has some value because it gives the survivors a chance to get together and consul each other. If I decide to do this I suspect I'll have to have a Spa colored urn....
Oh, you can bet cash money that Carmen will also have a spa-colored urn. He had paper plates, cups, napkins, siverware to match his spa at the meet. I'm waiting on him to dye his hair spa yellow.

Julie, that tupperware story is too funny. Isn't there a program called "people do the darndest things?"

Yep, now that I think about it, there is still segregation in the funeral industry down home. It's pretty much accepted by both sides. Interesting.
They were a "special" kind of family. (Cue scary music...)

Church is another place that is largely segregated. I've seen this all over the country and not just here. Everyone gets to choose his or her place of worship and it seems we choose to separate. It is interesting--maybe a new thread??

everybody -- Julie, girl -- glad to see you participating!!! Well, here's my $0.02 -- roll my sorry dead rear on out in a ditch, burn it up, cut it up and pass out whatever I haven't used up -- I don't care --- BUT -- PARTY FIRST!!!! I'm with OR on this one -- I want a BIG OLE SENDOFF -- I've told +1 to call all my s2k buddies and I want a great big ole tour in my memory with lots of happy laughter and lots and lots of happy music and good food. Now, as for what to do with whatever may be left if I'm cremated (which is fine by me), mix mine up with with my dog's ashes and sprinkle them on the lawn of one of those really, really exclusive clubs that disallows certain folks due to their race, color or creed -- that'll teach 'em.

Dean- My reservations relate to the lack of any physical commemoration of the person's life. Due to an interest in geneology, I know where the last 2-3 generations of my family are buried....have visited the cemeteries to check names/ dates/ etc.

Since neither of my parents have a physical grave, I've thought of having their names engraved on one of their parents tombstones....just as a memorial and listing for future generations. I know it's weird....but that's just a feeling that I have had since they passed in 1980 and 1986

Another interesting aspect that has been revealed on public TV and in other media:

The cost of death :$$$:

Speaking of the cost of death...there was a Van Halen song on this issue. If I remember correctly, the lyrics go:

Gotcha comin' in,
Gotcha comin' out,
Same amount,
In and out.

Comparing the cost of birth with the cost of death.

I prefer cremation, but if it will prevent more golf courses then I'm willing to be buried.

Many of my relatives were cremated (most of them had sense enough to die first )and gravestones for them were added to their family plots.

I'm also something of a genealogy buff. I have my family (on my mother's side) traced back to the early 1600's. Once upon a time, they owned approximately one third of what is now the state of Maine. What a motley crew of privateers and horse thieves they were.
