Discussion and review of Good Movies
#81
I never go to a movie theater. I hate going to a movie theater. But never-the-less I really like seeing a good movie! So when the nominations for Best Picture come out I generally have no idea what they are about. It was no different this year. But after the Oscars I start my research to get an idea what I might want to watch when it shows up on tv. Here's my list. Oh, and yes, I do take into consideration what you Vintage people have seen and what you thought..... your thoughts are shown as + or - . According to your recommendations Green Book should have won.
2019 Best Picture Nominations
Green Book – black piano player and white driver in 1962’s south, voted best picture but lots disagree ++++
Bohemian Rhapsody – best male, took several but not great unless you are a Queen fan +++
Roma – B&W about growing up with a nanny/house keeper in Mexico, best director, took several and apparently good
BlacKkKlansman – not that great
Black Panther – Marval movie of black super hero, considered by many the best movie +-
The Favourite – 18th century Queen Ann, not that good but won best female ++-
A Star Is Born – fading actor falls for new talent, good songs +
Vice – no idea what its about and only Scoots saw it with a mixed review

I liked Green Book, but did not think it was in Best Picture territory. Did not like The Favourite at all. Have not seen the others yet. The +1 loved Bohemian Rhapsody, and his mother (88) has seen it three times!! Go figure.

Sorry Deb, I thought Green Book's Oscar was well deserved. It was not racist. (IMHO)
If others have seen The Favorite, please weigh in. After last night, I thought I would look for it.
We watched the whole program, but not live, so we could fast forward through the speeches.
If any of you have a chance to see Capernium or Never Look Away, you must see them. Both were up for Oscars, but I don't recall if either won their category.

I haven't seen The Green Book but it's on my Netflix DVD list. I did see A Star is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody in the theater and liked them both. I watched The BlacKkKlansman on DVD. I started watching Black Panther on DVD but turned it off and sent it back.
The Blackkklansman had me confused. I thought it was an old movie but caught on that it was made about an old event and was a new movie. I turned it off the first night as I was so disturbed with the blatant racism. I finished it and ended up really liking it. The fact that it happened in Colorado Springs added to my interest since I'm living in Colorado now and currently reading about how the native Indians were slaughtered. Interesting state. The ending was great!

We saw the Favorite and enjoyed it. It did drag at times but the rest made up for it. Good acting and well played.
