With our kitchen re-do we have replaced the refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher.

We stayed with "Plain Jane" white Whirlpool appliances. We've had good luck with Whirlpool washer and dryers, so we went back to the local dealer. Decent pricing and free delivery too.

The one "luxury" item for the kitchen was purchased tonight. I bought a 13" Sharp LCD TV for the counter. The cook (Rick) likes to watch TV while he cooks. It will look much neater on the counter than the bulky 13" that was there before.

We had a Bosch dishwasher, and as a result we became very good friends with the dishwasher repair guy.

After several visits over a couple of years, he bought it from us for parts (for his other Bosch customers) and sold us (at a big discount) an Asko. We were sorry to leave it behind when we sold that house last summer. HPH
Thanks for the warning. It is never a good thing to be on a first name basis with your dishwasher repair guy.

We are waiting to get an estimate back from a contractor about remodeling our kitchen. In typical fashion after a meeting over a week ago we have heard NOTHING.

Hmmm, Is he watching Rachel Ray on the Food Channel?

take a look at the fisher-paykel dw draw. not cheap but a good unit. i've installed them and own one my-self. not having to bend over to load unload is nice. also in a tight kit layout, this draw design allows for a cabinet below the dw unit. we like it and its works well for our 3 person family.
We have these also, double drawer up & single drawer downstairs in the in-law apartment. We've been happy with them, but as you said not cheap.

Dr. Cloud: I'll keep my fingers crossed on the Bosch.

My dishwasher purchase is off to a less than auspicious start. The delivery truck showed up with it this morning and managed to break a fairly large branch off one of the live oaks in my front yard while backing into the driveway. The driver unloaded the washer and opened the box, and there's a huge dent in the door. So, it's going back and I have to wait until Sat. for a replacement. Now I'm really looking forward to buying a refrigerator.

Bummer on that, Dean.

Our new dishwasher and microwave still are in boxes in the basement. I hope to have them installed next week, and I hope all is OK when the boxes are opened.

Dean, post some pics of your remodeling efforts so far. I have some of mine over in New England if you want to take a peek.

Maybe you should wait on the refrigerator purchase until they come out with the stainless, dent proof models. Titanium perhaps.

I will when Martha gets back from Houston with the camera.
We ended up buying Shaker style cabinets in natural maple. We got an estimate on special order cabinets and it would have cost us around $6000 before countertops, hardware, delivery, and install. So we compared the price, build, and quality of those to the DIY cabinets. They're made of the exact same materials, but the price was around $2800. For $3200 I'm willing to assemble a lot of cabinets. I've been pleasantly surprised by how well they all fit together - the tolerances are pretty tight. I'm also making my own countertops out of two layers of 3/4" plywood, then covering it with 4" square porcelain tiles. The backsplashes will also be done with tile arranged in some kind of pattern, but Martha hasn't picked out the colors yet or decided on what she wants for a pattern.
