Don't Speed in Finland!

I think that system is great now that I am retired. With what I make on SS they will be paying me!

What could be more fair? There is a lot the U.S. legal system could take from the Europeans. But of course we are a proud nation, too proud to consider that others might have a better idea. Would like to hear LB's take on this, in a non-political way, of course.

Based on the last discussion we all had about the second amendment, it seems many people here believe that some of the tenants of our legal system are outdated and we need to give "new things" a try. So a discussion about the quaint notions of equal protection under the law, and proportionality of the punishment to the crime would likely be dismissed out of hand in favor of a system that punishes the wealthy to a higher degree than the poor for committing the same crime.
I guess I could also throw in that the real deterrent to speeding is loss of license for repeat offenses, but I guess that is beside this country's growing desire to punish those who have money simply for having it. Oh dear... was that political?

I don't think it would change much. When people lose their license many just drive anyway.

I would add one final note: A $100 fine assessed against someone with a six figure income is not equal to a $100 fine assessed by someone supporting a family on $15/hr wages. OK, one other thing: The Finish system DOES provide for punishment proportional to the crime. For a given income, the fines are proportional to the speeder's violation.
