Duty: You either had it instilled in you by your upbringing or you did not.

Iraq: There are no easy answers to complex questions.
(No easy solutions to complex problems)

(just a summary of my opinions on this thread,
Utilizing my penchant for oversimplification)
Cheers,

I don't see a repeat of history in the public's treatment of returning troops, at least I hope not. I'm getting too old to end up in jail again.
Dean, I see the exact opposite here. I don't think that duty asks for recognition, but these guys deserve our respect at the very least. They allow us to sit on our duffs, order Dominos, and debate words on the internet.

Nanner, nanner, nanner, huh? Okay, I don't have a comeback for that one.

I've seen nothing but overwhelming support for returning military personnel in my neck of the woods. My experiences when returning stateside to SD some thirty odd years ago were not what I'd call pleasant. Then again, the demographics here are different than those on the Left Coast.

9/11 solidified the general public's support for people in uniform - any uniform: military, fireman, and policeman. Nothing that's happen in Iraq or elsewhere has change that.

That's what I thought too, but apparently this isn't the case in cordy's neighborhood.

Not the case here in the great liberal Northeast.

As for commenting on war when you have not served your country in war, well I agree, those who have not served can comment, but to encourage or even demand war if you have been unwilling to commit yourself is, IMHO, hypocritical.

I have asked that question on other forums and the only people that ever respond are those that have served this country in time of conflict. Again, just my opinion.

(still keeping my blood pressure under control )

[QUOTE=dean,Jun 28 2005, 08:59 AM] ...I think folks who have never served can discuss military duty in the abstract like any other subject. But

That's true, and I have no problem with that philosophy. Many countries require all able-bodied young men to serve for a while, and I think that's a good thing.

I've never been in the service, so have no experience of it, but I have the greatest respect for them. I know not every individual deserves the respect, as in any group, but as Major Winters says in Band of Brothers "You salute the rank, Captain Sobel, not the man."
