Okay, now I need help with the networking part. I run 6 TVs and don't want to pay through the nose for the new service. Can I avoid having them charge me for each TV like the cable company wanted to with their boxes?
That's often an issue, Granny. Most services want you to have a box for each TV and that runs up the price.

With our area, if you want anything other than basic/extended cable, you need a box for that TV, but you only get the extra features on the TV with a box. The other TV's would get only basic cable.

...I'll be watching hand puppet shows from the back of the TV.
Some days that would be a vast improvement over what is on!

I am trying to cut back where possible. I think that it is time to dump the DirecTV and the land line with the DSL. Time Warner can get me everything at a lower cost! I just hate to lose my land line number. I've had it for twenty nine years!
Dave, you might be able to take your number with you....not sure in your area, but if folks in our area switch their phone to the cable company, they keep their numbers.

G-
If/when you talk to them, make sure that you tell them that Comcast is providing you with an analog signal for free. When Verizon went all digital a few months back they offered "no charge" digital converters for all TV that you didn't need a set top box for previously. They are trying to increase their customer base, so I would think that they would be willing to look at all issues intelligently, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, I have been wrong before.

Gene, my Comcast is rated for just 6 down/1 up. For $10 more per mo I can have 8 down. The maximum I can get for $20 more is 16 down.

Knowing that the max is 6/1 and I am getting 2/.7 to 3/.9 when I test.... what's your thoughts on that? btw, my modem is rated for 42/10. No wonder it's sleeping most of the time.

I did the tools/tweak review and there was no recommendations; saying everything was good (for a cheap guy ).
Dave, based on what you're paying for, I think you're OK.

G, I run 6 tv's also. There is one digital line in with spitters to the others, so all the tv's get digital. There is no extra charge. That said, my primary tv is the only one which gets the full treatment - record two channels at once, prem movies, etc.

Cool! Okay, now that I'm partially armed, should I also check to see what deals cable has to offer or should I bother since the general consensus is FiOS is better? I'll probably just want to see the price difference, if any, in my area. (sigh)

P
By all means contact Comcast. That way you will experience what it is like to get to talk to a live person in less than 25 minutes.
