Ford's New Tiny Engine

This is a total clean-sheet of paper designed engine done by their R&D group in Germany. One liter, 3-cylinder, direct injection turbo with 125hp. It has an iron block; they said when engines are that small you don't get the saving from going all aluminum that you would in larger engines. Another interesting feature is the drive belt is rubber (chain is normally considered much more reliable) and it's enclosed running in oil. As small cars get lighter in weight engines like this will become more attractive. Also, this could be an interesting motorcycle engine - could we see a Ford motorcycle some day?

Jim Ford is positioned to jump into diesel in the US anytime they wish. At the present they don't foresee the customer demand because the improved mileage is eaten up by the added cost of the engine and the additional cost of diesel fuel. There's no incentive for cost conscious buyers because the payback takes so long. If any one of those three key elements were to change they are more than ready to be a big player.
I would be buying a Focus ST next year if it only came in a 3-door
And it would be my 1st Ford since my '67 Fairlane 500
In fact, I would be honored to buy a Ford, the only American car company that did not need Uncle Sam bail their asss out
And that was because they have been making themselves better for a long time
