Default Forecasting the Future

For the last couple weeks, I've been working on forecasting my product buys of what we're going to sell next year.

I have all the historicals. I've been doing it a long time. I'm pretty good at it.

BUT THIS IS THE HARDEST FORECAST I"VE EVER DONE.

I assume you mean how much, not styles. Right?

I start out with around 350 different categories of products. Then I forecast them in units and extrapolate historical dollars to make a guesstimate of cost. I can't really set style or colors yet, I have to wait for style sheets and markets. That's really the buyers choice. I can tell them how many swim suits we need to buy in a given sex and size range to cover a particular time frame. I can tell them about what it will cost. But buying style is an art form, one that requires perfect color sense. That I don't have.

Buying used to be done from dollars but computers have made units a better way to buy. You get a more even distribution and flow of goods and dollars.

If the Mayan predictions are correct, you won't have to plan for long.

The date hasn't changed. The article is older. The History Channel had a recent program on it.
