I found myself driving at a slower pace simply because of stories like this, the roads can be very unforgiving if you push the limits.

That was another crash. Lee wound up hung in the trees.

The very first time that I ran The Dragon it was behind a very good driver from Florida whose car was shod in track rubber while I had fairly used street tires. So, my very first run was uphill and my concentration was devoted to the car in front and management of the roadway. I soon figured out that the only way that I could stay with the other car was to throw my car into a full power slide to keep exit speed which I did all the way to the top. We had a snack and I then went down at a reasonable pace with another group. This was the first time that I got to take in my surroundings and came to the realization that I could have killed myself on that damn road. I was never again able to get up the courage to push a power slide. That place scared the crap out of me after I realized what an uninformed fool I had been.

^ Harry that was smart of you to realize the danger, perhaps a bit late but better than never. I would think first time visitors make up the vast majority of the accidents. I was always scared of the fact that my cel phone was not of any use to me there, and it wasn't easy to get help if you went off road. Plus any shortfalls in your vehicle handling setup and your driving skills really show up quick on that road, and not necessarily something you notice on other more pedestrian roads. I came away learning that I needed more driving practice, better tires, and a few more handling tweaks.

I never drove The Dragon. I've driven roads more or less like it in southern Ohio, Kentucky, etc. The drives I remember most were in old-out-of-date-no-power-steering-MGs. My arms were so tired I couldn't move them at the end, my brakes were so hot I wouldn't touch them, even after converting to disc from drum, etc. Driving similar roads in my Audi or S2000 were no where near as physically demanding but the high was far more because of the speed that was required of both brain and reaction time - - so I respect those of you who have met the challenge.

I drove Virginia's version which is the snake, and the back of the dragon as well. They were a bit tiring and equally dangerous having not more than a few inches of shoulder before the vehicle would plunge down hundreds of feet if you ever made a miss-step.
