My handy dandy $69 dash cam captured this on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles in December. All I could do was brake and hope the idiots in front of me sorted it out without collecting anyone else who wasn't paying attention. I edited out the sound. You don't want to hear me singing.

Currently out of stock. The closest I have found to it in price is this:
http://dx.com/p/ex-7-2-0-tft-1-0mp-g...f-4-led-175340

Note that the unit at DX.com has a different type of second camera.

Most of these cameras come out of China or Korea. The US is WAY behind in utilization of and development of inexpensive dash cams. They are in use in Asia and all over Eastern Europe. Yet they are very infrequently used here in the states. I believe this will change dramatically in the next few years. And soon YouTube will be overrun with videos titled, "Those Crazy American Drivers!" instead of those crazy Russian drivers.

Personally, the one I really want is the pittasoft blackvue dr500gw-hd. And I want it with the power magic pack. But I'm waiting for prices to come down and to see if they really have fixed the overheating problem that the previous model had. Probably be a year before I pull the trigger on that. In the meantime, this one will do, along with using one of my retired smartphones with the Daily Voyager app installed. Great way to re-purpose old technology that one would normally just toss in a drawer or send to e-waste.

btw, my decision to try this particular unit out was heavily influenced by this guy's review:

I enjoy his reviews. He's just the right amount of factual and goofy at the same time. And the accent is kind of amusing.

Which is why I said I am waiting for the price to come down. :-)

But in the meantime I don't want to be without a witness cam in my cars; hence the inexpensive model I mentioned and the re-purposing of the retired smartphone. Honestly, I think if more people realized that a two year old cell phone can be an excellent dash/witness cam, there would be a lot more witness cams in use right now. You don't need a sim card and it's just dirt simple to set up. Uses the built-in GPS to track location and speed and can even sense a shock from an impact and "lock" the file being recorded at that moment (as well as just before and just after) so your evidence is not over-written. And the 8GB microSD card mine came with is plenty of space to hold a lot of recorded time before the oldest files get deleted in a FIFO standard. So my little HTC MyTouch 3G now has a new purpose in life instead of collecting dust.

Hopefully this info was of some help.

Just an aside: "sis" would be more accurate than "bro" in this particular situation.

^^ I love it when a sistah talks tech. Be still my heart! Can't believe I'm looking at this thinking, geez I'm glad I'm retired. I guess that is the ONE really great thing about becoming "mature".

What are your experiences so far? How does it seem to handle heat? Any quirkiness with the WiFi? What size microSD card are you using?

I want details! :-D

And I shall DELIVER!

So far I love it. Video is clear, sound is clear, my speed is accurate and so is the GPS. I was actually sideswiped on Saturday by a truck and it was caught on camera. (I can send u a link to the video if you like thru pm, I'm not posting it public yet)

I have noticed the camera is a little hot, however not extremely hot, just about what you'd expect since its mounted on your front windshield .

Wifi is alright, it kind of cuts in and out at first, but I reset my phone and now it works 95% of the time. (The app its self is what I feel is unstable, not wifi in general)

I have shut off auto wifi because of the interference with my Bluetooth

Running at 16 gig card that came with the camera, but will soon buy a 32 gig. (I noticed 16 gig saved about 4 days of driving for me)

Let's talk a little bout smash and grab value. I like that the camera is black. But it has a silver ring along camera eye that catches attention. My whole front windshield is tinted at 50% so that helps.

After what happened Saturday, I've been debating about buying 3 more (family cars). I contacted my retailer and he said I can get more for $10 off each (comes to about 260, no power magic)

Let me know if you have more questions (sorry for typos, in class on my phone)
