Forgot to mention, it isn't summer time yet, so don't quote me on the heat of the device. I'm sure it'll increase during summertime.

2 things I hate is it takes up my cigarette lighter so I can't charge my phone (Im still unsure about power magic)

And the start up time, its about a good 30 seconds. After my accident, my car shut off, I restarted and the camera didn't capture about 30 seconds of the dude driving a way.

I think we should start a dash camera thread for others as well. This cam in handy when the truck driver attempted to blame me and I simply pointed at my camera and said, "do you want to watch the video???"

He shut up right away

^^ Great info! Thanks. Do send the link, if you don't mind. I understand wanting to keep it out of general public viewing before the situation is fully resolved.

About the cig lighter... You might consider an outlet splitter. I got one for under $20 that I have had a few days and so far so good.

Basically it's a splitter with two sockets and two USB ports. One of the USB ports will do 2.1 amps if you want to use it for powering a tablet. I know the cams can be finicky about power so I wanted to use the provided power adapter, but I didn't want to give up charging my phone too. I like this splitter because the plug isn't overly bulky and doesn't interfere with opening the glove box. The cable is a good length so I can tuck the actual splitter part behind the driver's seat. It's a Bestek model, if you are interested.

I just sent you a PM with the link

I actually did buy a splitter from amazon for about $5 but I feel it is too flimsy. When I plug something in, it wiggles and doesnt make a good connection. How are the hole sizes for the splitter you bought? when you plug in your camera or something into the cig lighter, does it fit snug? or is it lose??

I bought this outlet splitter before I drove my NSX to Vegas back in 2010: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It worked great for powering my radar detector, GPS, and XM radio. I used the 4th outlet to charge my cell phone, since it did not have a USB port. As to desii's question, the plugs fit very snugly.

This one is not flimsy. That's why I chose this one over the less expensive ones. Both ports and the plug into the cig lighter are all snug as the proverbial bug in a rug. I actually have the business end of it hanging over one of the hooks behind the driver's seat so the ports point downward, and no issues of anything falling out yet. *fingers crossed* The reviews of this one were pretty good. Other devices, not so much.

I thought about getting one with more ports, but decided I already have too much junk and don't want to encourage adding more. :-D

My handy dandy $69 dash cam captured this on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles in December. All I could do was brake and hope the idiots in front of me sorted it out without collecting anyone else who wasn't paying attention. I edited out the sound. You don't want to hear me singing.
Looks like a totally normal day of commuting where I live. I find that generally driving 5mph or so faster then everyone else if I can, keeps me out of the trenches of common BS like this.
