the future of marriage

Oh, by the way, Rodney, while I'm supporting gay marriages, I completely agree with you that Mayor Newsom is going about this thing the wrong way. I fear that folks who are getting these licenses in San Francisco will lose them.
Now, here in MA, when folks do eventually get their licenses, it's looking pretty unlikely that they'll get revoked.
Nick, were we bashing the money grubbers??

As an interesting, though related aside, I watched one of the news programs last week that followed and detailed a marriage in which the male partner after 33 yrs of marriage (and two children) underwent a sex change operation and now is female. The couple at the time of the broadcast was still together and interestingly enough, are still considered a married couple in the eyes of the law. Evidently this man had struggled for many years with the feeling of being female trapped in a male body. His wife is not a lesbian and they are not participating in any type of love-making. According to this program, only about 10% of couples to whom this type of thing happens remain married. I guess what was of most interest to me is that in South Carolina where this couple resides, they are still considered man and wife.

I can honestly see the advantage of polygamy in nature i.e. the fittest male mates with multiple females to ensure a strong group. However, in humans, I am going to chalk it up to good ol' fashioned "I need something different" syndrome.

While many in this group seem generally accepting of gay marriages, it seems the response to the polygamy question is less decisive. Actually, In many countries it is the other way around. And anyone who has studied the history of the Mormons knows that polygamy was practiced legally in the USA within the life time of some members of this forum.
