Woman love the S2000. It has become my official date car. Sometimes they even ask "Are you going to bring the convertible tonight?". I'm convinced the S2000 has style that will last and be timeless. Woman love it............

Long live the sexy roadster!

The women I escort from time to time absolutely love the car.

"The five-speed shifter snicked firmly into first gear. Pontiac sourced the manual gearbox from the same company that supplies the six-speed shifter for the Honda S2000. With lots of foot room, the pedals are easy to find and well placed for heel-and-toe operation. Pedal feel is good with our muscular output matched by the mechanical response, making us feel part of the car. Unfortunately, the tranny of our test car was not in production tune and it felt like we were pulling away in second gear."

The S2000 transmission was developed by Honda's R&D Center to handle the 9000 rpms. This is outlined by Kyoji Kitajima in a JSAE paper dated 9/20/99. I can't say who actually manufacturers the unit. It may very well subed out due to its limited production numbers.

If it's just a subcontractor building the Honda unit, then that would be extremely misleading (the article, that is). Yes, I too think Honda designed the S2000 gearbox. Anyway, someone should drive the Solstice and figure out if it's anywhere close to the S. I fear strong disappointment.

From a styling view point the Solstice car-show concept car was a knockout in my opinion and many other enthusiasts thought so. With it's targeted market price, off-the-shelf parts, and it's $1500/unit UAW baggage, I simply can't imagine it being anywhere near the sports car that the S2000 is - no matter how smoothly it shifts.
I would love to see it live up to its potential and be a hit but I won't be surprised to see history repeat itself. I lived in Pontiac for a while and I recall the talk of a two-seater mid-engine sports car being in the works - what seemed like for years and years (much like the Solstice which has become old news and the cars are not even out yet). Finally, the Fiero came out in the mid-80s. We all know how it lite up the sports car world. NOT. As I recall they finally had a fairly decent car after about 5 years of production.... when it was too late.

I wonder if the Solstice will do better. I imagine it's going to drive like a sportscar wannabe, not like a sportscar.

I saw one at the last car show. I was impressed. Now I don't know about handling and what not but they are using the same engine that Gm put in the Saturn and Cavaliers and even the Saab. Thing churns out about 177 horses and they should have a SC model with just over 200 horses. Saturn is going to have the same car but they call it the Sky. Go figure. GM GM GM.
