Hey Wing (Also posted duplicate of this in your Atlantic Section)! I have not done this, but apparently you can. After owning a streetpilot c550 for some time, I got out the manual (I'm one of those guys who don't need instructions 
) and was going through it one day, looking for answers to this very question. You can setup your own waypoints using Garmin Mapsource and then download them (*.gpx files) into the unit. My manual has a whole section on this "Loading MapSource Waypoints on Your c550" and "Viewing Your Saved Locations in MapSource". I downloaded 'your' manual from the Garmin site and it too makes casual mention of this on pg. 41 of the appendix (bottom left hand side). You might want to also call customer support and explain what you want to do (1.800.800.1020 or 1.913.397.8200). Hope this works out for you. Happy New Year.
