Default Why is it so easy?

since my knee surgery I've been working pretty hard at physical therapy.

I had gotten up to 48 minutes a day on the bike and hitting all of the other exercises thrown in and was making really good headway.

Then came the ice storm and subsequent power failure and refugee status at the in-laws and follow-on 24" snow storms.
Needless to say without equipment and being busy doing yard work etc, I fell off the wagon.

back on the bike this morning and it like starting all over

oh to be 17 again.

I blame beer, junk food, pig outs.... if it only happened when there was ice storm I'd still be 132 pounds.

Last week I was reading the newspaper with the doctor's health column. The subject was exercise and part of the response to a question was how soon we get out of shape if we quit exercise.

Let's just say, it doesn't take long.

I have pretty much been a slug since we changed the clocks. That article prompted me to get on the treadmill. I've done it a few times and hope to be back on it tomorrow.

The body is not easy to keep in shape. Time and gravity are not our friends. Add in a slower metabolism, some extra food, junk food and alcohol and there is a lot of

I remember when I could eat just about what I wanted. I'd put on a couple pounds in a weekend or on a vacation, and they'd be gone by Tuesday. Not any more.

Yeah, this aches and pains stuff of getting old wasn't one of the things I remember signing up for. I try to roll with it but it does depress me.

I miss running the most. Just the joy of running for miles and seeing the scenery change, smelling the air and feeling invincible.

At this point I'm just glad to still be alive and be able to do most of the things I enjoy (if I could remember what they all are) . I've noticed it takes me twice as long to do half as much as I once did. The aches and pains probably bother me more than anything else and they grate on my nerves. I become quite sensitive and pretty much an old grouch. I hate it. I am, however, happy to report that I can still drive the S.
Yeah, the S still makes me happy. I should make an effort to drive it more often. The traffic where I live now is the pits. I miss having canyons all around to pick from.

Must do an S drive on New Years Day!

I've gotten lazy about exercise. I walk alot every day, but need to get back to rowing, which has the advantage of being both aerobic and muscle toning. For years I was thin with no effort. Then middle age hit. Just got back from a fairly long drive in the S - warm day today - 60s. Won't last long, though. Back to 40s tomorrow.

Every winter I put on 10-15 lbs. I still go to the gym and do most of the stuff I normally do, it's just that my body puts the layer of fat on. I can't explain it and can't keep it from happening.

Bike riding is really nice to the body, and you get to cover even more area so you take in more scenery. Really depends on if you have some safe roads away from where you live, but even in less bike-friendly areas you can hook up with a group ride and have relative safety.
I've always been very active, but the weight is slowly sneaking on making running harder on the body and race times suffer. I have plans for this year though...
