Hand held radios
Went on a 27-car drive today through the back roads and hills of Indiana. Audio quality of these units through the headset at speed is very good, and we had no problems at all with range for this size drive.
Left Cincinnati at 6 am, back home at 6:30pm, radio on all the time, still at full bars on the battery meter.

Adam and I went to Radio Shack this afternoon and bought a 1/8 Stereo to a 1/8 mono adaptor. Once plugged into the Midland you can listen over a "Walkman" type pair of headphones and still use the microphone that's built into the unit. You can also plug a wireless FM modulater into it and listen over your car radio (and still use the built in mic).
We tested them outside, the sound quality is very good. Much better than any of our Motorolas. We didn't have much of a chance to test the range, but we were about 1/2 mile apart and the sound and reception was excellent.
Dave, I'm very glad to hear about the battery time on your unit. I probably didn't have mine fully charged the other day. One of the nice things that I got with the 650 was a car charger. I can charge the unit as I drive to the meet.

Defroster Vent - best place - agreed!
I didn't use scan mode; we had picked a channel for the drive; I wonder if scan is harder on the batteries? I did my share of talking and was really pleased with the battery life I'm seeing.
Might order up one of those car chargers, tho, just in case. In either case, I'm far happier with these radios for both small and medium sized drives than I was with the Moto (5570 I think??)

I just got my license on line. Its $80 for 5 years. Got to www.fcc.com and search for ULS (Universal Licensing System). Register to get your 10 digit FCC log-in/id, apply for your license, pay your $80 via credit card and 2 days later you'll have your call letters.

Guess who's about to become an outlaw.
Dean, outlaw sounds so illegal and all. Try renegade and see how it fits.
Let me add my thanks to everyone for the info.
I am ordering Midland 600s this AM. Seem to be the same as the 650s minus the camo and wildlife calls. Time to replace my 4-5 yr. old Motos

You might already be too late.
