How good are you at hearing sounds? Are you pretty much in tune that you can tell something is wrong with an appliance, your car, other equipment, just by an odd sound? Being car guys and gals, I'd guess most of you are pretty good at this. What about your +1s?

I've driven my Jeep for 10+ years. I know when I hear a clunk, squeak, or noise that isn't normal. Our washing machine is in the basement. The other day, from upstairs I could hear an unusual clunking/thunking. I mentioned it to Rick and he checked it out. Sure enough some suspension spring had let go.

I know many people, both men and women, who just don't hear the noises. Maybe they have the ability to ignore the sounds of something malfunctioning; after all, the sound of something malfunctioning generally means you have to open your wallet.

So what do you hear?

Oh, yeah, I hear things. I heard my differential making a different noise a year before it gave out in my 2005 S2000. I had other people listen and they couldn't hear it but my son did.

I pay close attention to different sounds. My day-to-day life is quiet (very rarely turn on the TV). I have my fountain on right now and that's soothing. I pick up on sounds.

Hi,

I'm really good at hearing 'noises' but when it comes to conversation, not so good. I believe my awareness of noises around me distracts my attention.

Last week after some highway driving I heard an additional slight noise coming from under the hood of the S. No one else could hear it, but when I took the serpentine belt off and examined the pulleys I found that the OEM idler pulley bearing was badly worn. So I replaced it and the noise was gone. I think car people probably have an ear for their own vehicles and become aware when the purring sounds change frequency

My hearing is excellent for noise. I usually hear things before others do, even my dog. When people come to the house and park in my driveway, I usually look up first before my dog does. Same for thunder and fireworks.

A couple of years ago we were in Chicago and walking in the city with tall buildings all around. The Blue Angels were practicing for a show that weekend and Elaine noticed that before she heard anything I was looking up in the sky and then all of a sudden the jets would appear (blocked by the buildings).

I also have to sleep with earplugs.

Funny you should ask this now...
I awoke the 17th unable to hear in my right ear...
Thought at 1st it was wax or something, not so.
Ended up at doctor by 20th am,sent to audiologist, have what is known as Sudden Hearing Loss! (Google it)
Currently on steroids, some but very little improvement so far.
Going back for another hearing test Monday, then docs on tues.

Up untill then my hearing, though not exceptional, served me well.
Now I have a very hard time even telling which direction a noise is actually coming from.

My Brother -In -Law has the same thing. I had never heard of this problem until he contracted it. Good luck with your recovery, Levi.
