Default Hello In There

We had an apartment in the city,
Me and Loretta liked living there.
Well, it'd been years since the kids had grown,
A life of their own left us alone.
John and Linda live in Omaha,
And Joe is somewhere on the road.
We lost Davy in the Korean war,
And I still don't know what for, don't matter anymore.

Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger,
And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day.
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello."

Me and Loretta, we don't talk much more,
She sits and stares through the back door screen.
And all the news just repeats itself
Like some forgotten dream that we've both seen.
Someday I'll go and call up Rudy,
We worked together at the factory.
But what could I say if asks "What's new?"
"Nothing, what's with you? Nothing much to do."

Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger,
And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day.
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello."

So if you're walking down the street sometime
And spot some hollow ancient eyes,
Please don't just pass 'em by and stare
As if you didn't care, say, "Hello in there, hello."

Rob, as an author, I sure would feel a lot better about these various things you post if you'd provide attributions. Surely, if you like the words enough to post them here, the originator deserves mention.

And this INCLUDES those for which you get that attribution. HPH

Everyone knows that's the work of John Prine, well, now they do. He's the best.

It has nothing to do with what "everyone knows." It has everything to do with respect for the originator. HPH

Good cheer to all.

Not a problem. As Smokee said the song "Hello In There" was written by John Prine. I post it without author or comment just to see what others will have to say. In the future I will post the author.

I miss Steve Goodman - he was a buddy of John Prine, but died of leukemia in 1984.

Saw Steve Goodman in concert once and he had a guitar in conventional tuning and one in open tuning on the stage with him. He was playing the guitar in conventional tuning and a string broke right in the middle of the song. Without a hitch, he took that guitar off and picked up the one in open tuning and went right into 16 tons - one of the most amazing concert moments of the many concerts I attended.

Rob you could list 4 possible choices for the author and let us guess which it might be. That would satisfy both the need for attribution as well as provoke discourse.
