HEY S1997
Without looking it up, do you know what "losing my religion" means to a southerner???
I know that I use a lot of little "weird" terms that have +1
. He was totally amused when I explained the meaning of "losing my religion" to him. He thought yall was funny, but we southerners use a lot of terms (I swannee, loosely construed as I swear now"), etc. that are lost on residents of other areas. It is very interesting to me to hear other phraseology used in the north, east or west that is not commonly heard in my "neck of the woods". Only when I'm speaking with my family do I lapse into the old-time ways of using my total southern drawl and "southern speak" and use terms that were simply every day language when I was growing up and young. What are other colloquialisms that are used in other regions of the United States that mean little or nothing to residents of other areas? Post 'em up, people. I'd love to hear 'em (that means them in case you didn't know)

Every place else people stand in line, but here in New Jersey and New York we stand on line.
Everywhere else you boo athletes you don't like, but here we're much more polite, we respond with a Bronx cheer.
When you're in a hurry you do things in a matter of seconds, but since our clocks run so much faster we do things in a New York minute.
More (and there are lots more) as I think of them.
