Jonas I drove from here to Denver last year and never went on a freeway. I found beautiful empty 4 lanes in lots better shape than the freeways. There are lots of historical markers too.

Jim, are you going this way for the caravanning or the scenery? From my drive a couple years ago, the Interstate from Phoenix > LA region is pretty blah...except for a detour thru Joshua Tree N.P.

There is also a really funky desert memorial to some group of WWII vets....it was very strange to find it along the road Does anyone know what I'm talking about....Patty?

AZ to LA is not very scenic anywhere -- unless you find the desert appealing. I caravaned from Phoenix for the last Honda Homecoming, and it was great fun with the AZ guys. Besides, I took my time on the mountain roads down through eastern and central Arizona to Springerville and Phoenix. I love that country -- as a kid growing up I spent some great times with my friends trout fishing at Big Lake in AZ. We lived in El Centro, CA.

I had forgotten about seeing the veterans' memorial on I-10.

Here are our tentative routes:

Northern Route West and East:

More Southern Route West and East:

Southern Route East (Homebound only):

Any opinions on these routes, either from experience with the roads, or otherwise?

I've already bookmarked Kyras' trip log from her drive out to Ohio in 2005, and intend to fully re-read it soon to get ideas of mileage per day, etc..

Also, her drive out to Spring Fling in Wintergreen:

Jonas, I pretty much did your first and second routes. The first one on the way to the Buckeye Run in July 2005 and the second one on the way home from Wintergreen/Spring Fling, in May 2007. I am partial to Colorado and Utah, so I would most likely plan a trip from here to Ohio, with a couple of nights saved for time there. I've been to Moab, Bryce Canyon Zion and the Grand Canyon and they were great but Colorado is my favorite place to drive the S. I'd do like Jim says and travel in Colorado. September should be fine for weather. Maybe some rain, as in thundershowers, but no snow. My Valentine1 radar detector is my security blanket for those long hauls.

I agree. And the only difference that I would suggest on your northern route number 1 is that I would take US 50 across Colorado instead of the interstate. It's a beautiful route and the highways are first rate.

I may do I-40 going out as I plan on leaving from the Dragon and head west. I expect to return on I-80 via San Francisco.

Jonas:

If you take the I-70 route, I suggest dropping down south out of Denver on Hwy 285 to Hwy 50 west. As Scooterboy mentioned, you can easily encounter ice/snow on the Colorado Mtn passes/divides anytime after Labor Day. HC II isn't until Sept 25th, so there is a good chance of snow in the high country by then. By coming south out of Denver, you can skirt around some of the higher passes, and still drive through some beautiful scenery.

I don't know about the S02 tires, but the AP2 Bridgestone RE050's are worthless on ice/snow.

Currently my plans involve a lengthy drive out along the more southern route and a quick return on the northern route.

I have plans for the Knapp Vineyard Sporting Roadster Tour at Watkins Glen the weekend of Sept 9, 10, and 11.

Leaving from Watkins Glen Sun, Sept 11, Christine and I will overnight in WV and arrive in Fontana on the Mon. Cruise the Dragon a bit Tues and then head out to Memphis for the night. Departing Memphis, we'll hit Baton Rouge and visit my family there for a few days before heading north to OKC for another few days visiting with family. Not sure exactly how many days in OKC or BR, but we'll definitely be heading to Abilene, TX on Sept 21. The 22nd we'll drive from Abilene, TX to Las Cruces, NM. Thurs, Sept 23rd we'll hit Phoenix, and Fri caravan out to LA with the PHX guys/gals.

Heading back from Homecoming, we'll take the northern route (Vegas, Denver, Omaha, Chicago, Scranton) to make it to Fall Crawl the following weekend.

We'd be more than happy to caravan with anyone else traveling the same route, either there or back

Yep, you definitely want to avoid this (Patty and Jerry's little adventure in the CO mountains on 10/4/09)!

Subscribing to this thread, good info so far. My +1 is on the fence - your idea of having your +1 fly into a destination to meet up down range is a good one. I probably need to install an mp3 adapter as well. Where is Jake when you need him?
