How do you plan a road trip/vacation?
Depends on the trip. Our annual trip to CA is to visit friends and we stay with them at their houses. We kind of set up a two week period and tell people we are coming. If they can see us, we stop by, if not, we don't.
Other trips are usually racing related. For those, I use the internet to set up hotel/motel reservations.

I voted based upon a focus on the word vacation
AAA, Google Maps, Internet - most reservations made in advance
If I were to vote on just a day-long drive/ride I would have voted, even though it is I and not We
We grab a map, pick a destination and fly/drive by the seat of our pants

April 28 I will depart on a cross country trip. Point A is Salinas, Ca while point B is Orrville, OH. The only plan I have is get there and back. I will make every effort to stop in North Platte, Nebraska. They were nice to the GI's during WWII, so I will try to stay a night or at least eat a meal in the town. I think I have to return to work around the 24 of May.
I took a cross country trip with a friend of mine about six or seven years ago and we just flew by the seat of our pants. We rented a car grabbed an Atlas and covered 8100 miles in 13 days. The older I get however the more I like to plan.
