I appreciate good service and pay accordingly. 20% mostly, regardless of whether it's a diner or a four-star place. I almost never go below 15%. My salon personnel get 20% always because working on me is labor intensive!! When I use them, a buck a bag for bellmen, airport skycaps, people like that. Never use parking valets with this car! If I have probs with management (restaurants or whatever), I call it to their attention and expect to be comped in some way. That's what should happen without asking.

Here in Australia we might give 10% in a restaurant, but many's the time we would leave nothing - and not even because the service was bad. It is just not necessary.

Same goes for taxis - we might just give the coins from the change.

As for haircuts. I had the same hairdresser for 25 years. I saw him once a month for the whole period, from bachelorhood, through meeting my wife, marriage, children etc. I never once gave him a tip. He never complained or gave me less than expected service. When he retired I gave him a nice present. I figure that my return business was the mark of my appreciation.

20 percent if service is good, down to 10 if bad.

I only tip in restaurants. My tip starts at zero and goes up as follows:

If the server is female: 5%
If the female server is good looking: 5% (partial credit given for partial good looks)
If the female server makes eye contact with me numerous times: 5%
If the female server makes physical contact with me: 5%
If my wife gives me a head slap: an additional 20%!

Phil, I think your normal 40% tip is making the rest of us look bad

Now I further understand why you had such a ruddy complexion at FC 03

I have a buddy who literally puts cash on the table and tells his server "This can be yours."

He ALWAYS gets great service.
