Default How was it for you?

HOW IT WAS FOR ME

A little house with three bedrooms, one bathroom and one car on the street,
and a mower that you had to push to make the grass look neat.

We only had a living room where we would congregate,
unless it was at mealtime in the kitchen where we all ate.

We only had one TV and channels maybe three,
But there was usually one of them with something worth to see.

Then there were the movies with our favorite movie star,
and nothing could compare to watching movies in our car.

The doctor used to be the family friend,
and didn't need insurance or a lawyer to defend?

The milkman used to go from door to door,
And it was just a few cents more than going to the store.

Mailed letters came right to our door,
without a lot of junk ads sent out by every store.

It was a time when just one glance was all that it would take,
and you would know the kind of car, both model and make.

One time the music that you played whenever you would jive,
was from a vinyl, big-holed record called a forty-five.

The record player had a post to keep them all in line
and the records would drop down and play one at a time.

Oh, the simple life we lived seems like so much fun,
how else can you explain a game of kick the can and run?

Sometimes it's fun to look way back and say,
That’s how it was for me!

It was a lot simpler, wasn't it?

I wish my grandson knew how to just "play" outside. I'm not sure he does.

I honestly miss those time. Yes we have so many more gadgets now but do we really need them?

There is a couple on the news in trouble again for letting their 6 and 10 year olds play alone in the park. When I was 7 or 8 years old I would ride my bike about three miles, across busy streets to my grandparents house. And playing outside, somewhere in the neighborhood, unattended? Was there any other way?

Same here. I was fortunate to have a very large wooded area behind the house. My friends and I would disappear into the woods and would not come out, until we got hungry. Every Mom in the neighborhood had a bell or whistle of some sort to call us home for dinner. Heaven forbid if my Dad caught me watching TV on a nice day! He would boot me out the door or find a chore for me.

I used to get told 'make sure you come home before the streetlights come on"

I think most of us who are the "older vintage" (born in the 1940's/ 1950's) have lived in the "best of times". Yeah, we had the Cold War and Khrushchev ranting in the UN....but it was a lot easier for most people; unless, of course, you happened to be non-white...but that's a different thread.

Funny sidebar on this topic: When I was 8-9 and we lived in the city of Harrisburg, I played with a black girl at here newer "ranch-style" house; her father was a doctor. Once her mothers sent me home because my clothes were dirty! Some things do not change...b/c Grannyrod still tries to manage my life when she has a chance

Good for you. If I told you how far I used to ride my bike and as I got older (early teens) hitch hick you would swear I was lying.

What is a hitch hick, Dave? Something that you could only do in Peeay, I guess...

If I could spell better I probably wouldn't need to put my thumb out.
