Growing up I had the free run of the entire town. This included the Oberlin College buildings in the summer (air conditioning and as long as you didn't make trouble). I just had to be home when the street lights came on or when dad whistled.

There is a couple on the news in trouble again for letting their 6 and 10 year olds play alone in the park. When I was 7 or 8 years old I would ride my bike about three miles, across busy streets to my grandparents house. And playing outside, somewhere in the neighborhood, unattended? Was there any other way?
