Growing up I had the free run of the entire town. This included the Oberlin College buildings in the summer (air conditioning and as long as you didn't make trouble). I just had to be home when the street lights came on or when dad whistled.

The town library was our refuge for A/C and an icy cold water fountain. That water tasted SOOOOOOOOOOOOO good.

There is a couple on the news in trouble again for letting their 6 and 10 year olds play alone in the park. When I was 7 or 8 years old I would ride my bike about three miles, across busy streets to my grandparents house. And playing outside, somewhere in the neighborhood, unattended? Was there any other way?
Good for you. If I told you how far I used to ride my bike and as I got older (early teens) hitch hick you would swear I was lying.
I delivered newspapers on my bike every morning before dawn.
