Hyper-Exotic Styling-an Observation
I agree that the ENZO is overdone (almost gawdy IMO).
But, the GT3 is plain. Almost no difference in that and the 911.
My favorite Porche will always be that 930 slant-nose. WOW, still looks tough today. And I agree that the 360 Modena or the 550 Maranello are the best looking Ferrari's.
What about the Z8, any Aston Martin, and the S7?? Anyone got an opinion?

In spite of what they'd like us to believe, designers and stylists don't design and style so much as they take their cues from the general public and try to interpret them. This is true in home design, designer clothing (all clothing), automobiles, and anything else that relies on styling, at least in part, to sell. Oftentimes the designer tries to interpret the public's mood or tastes and goes overboard in his/her attempt to translate that into a product. The pendulum has swung past aerodynamics and into the "stealth fighter jet" look. That is why you get styling like the Enzo. It is a statement, not a work of art.
This period in design reminds me very much of the late 50s and early 60s. The age of auto fins and chrome. Styling was a statement then too. It almost appears that each design was intended to be more outrageous than the one that came before it.
That the Enzo can run circles around the 250 GTO is not the issue. I would expect that. The issue is the aesthetics, the artistry of the design. Clearly the GTO wins hands down.
The idea that form follows function may also not be correct in this case. I'm not convinced that designs like the Enzo are any more functional than more artistic flowing designs. In fact, the opposite may be true.
The arguement that some of us are middle aged and tend to cling to old designs may have some merit. Still, there are styling cues that work and some that don't. Surfaces, textures, angles, curves, good style is good style regardless of its age.

I'll agree to your general responses, guys. However the the design of the s2k is beautiful - today or tomorrow. It's so clean and smooth and curvy in its execution. The best thing to say is that the desgners went for the understated beauty instead of loading up on things not needed. It's hard to come up with something "new" that appears fresh and beautiful. The first time I saw the s2k I said I wanted it. I hope Honda doesn't overdue and over-refine the lines a la enzo et al. If they have to cater to the ADM, the car's aethestics may change for the worse. I hope they resist.
I saw the Enzo at the car show. I liked it.
I don't like the current Porsche body style at all, but really disliked the old slant nose.
I love the GT and I loved GT 40s.
I really like the lines of the new Vette.
The latest Viper looks a lot better.

i LOVE THE Enzo
Pinanfarina (the Design firm that designs most all Ferrari's) has always had some of the most beautiful car designs ive ever seen IMO.
But as far as the SLR and the new Porsche supercar, i agree the styling is a bit blah
The ford GT looks good, but need to see it in person. Cant wait to see some of these cars in person at the Internation auto-show in NY
