I need a new notebook computer.
Thank you everyone for all of the good advice. This evening I placed an order for an IBM G41 Thinkpad.
I wish I could have considered the Apple, I am quite impressed with them and with what some of you have had to say, but too many of my clients, and my office, run on Windows based programs for me to comfortably buy one. I think there would have been too many problems converting files and running programs.
I looked at the WinBook. I had forgotten all about that company until someone mentioned it here. It is an interesting machine, and I was very tempted, but I think I got a better deal from IBM.
I have been using Dell computers for a very long time, and I have always been very satisfied with them. I still use my Inspiron 7000 with the Pentium 300 chip and 256 memory from time to time. Their old notebooks were built like tanks. My Inspiron 8200 that died on me wasn't quite as solid, but it gave me a number of years of good service. None the less, I was quite disappointed that I couldn't find anything in their assortment that came close to the features that I could get from IBM at anywhere near the price.
As I mentioned before, I have been using a borrowed IBM Thinkpad for the last two weeks and I've been quite pleasantly surprised at how good it is.
Once again, thanks for all of the help and advice. I new I could rely on Vintage to point me in the right direction.
I will post more when the computer arrives. In the meantime, feel free to post more computer info, especially notebook computer info, here.

Hey Matt
If this is something you do frequently, you can get a USB serial port:

Tom,Thanks. I actually do have a USB to serial adapter for my Palm V cradle which is serial.
It was just easier to use the old 95 OS unit than to try it with an older utility that is looking for a serial com port, going from USB to serial DB-9 with a gender bender to a DB-9 to DB-25 cable to a null modem cable.
Tom, I really do appreciate your suggestion. It was very nice of you to go out of your way.
Thanks again.
Regards,
Matt
P.S. I am sorry that we will not see you and Myra at SF05.
Just checked my latest PC magazine. They recommend:
Business notebooks:
--Acer Travelmate 3200
--HP Compaq nc6000
Value Notebooks:
--Apple iBook
Multimedia Notebooks:
--HP Pavillion dv1000
--Toshiba Qosmio E15
Good luck!

My new notebook arrived today. It's an IBM G41. I've been playing with it for the last two hours (actually, I've been loading all of my important software). As a matter of fact, I'm typing this on the notebook right now.
Tomorrow, I'll load my tax software and I'm good to go.
The machine has a P4 3.2 and 1 gig of memory, 80 gig hard drive and 256 of vid memory. I think it should keep me happy for the next few years.
Again, thanks everyone for the advice.

D'Oh!!
I just noticed this thread for the first time. I was just about to offer to let you use my IBM employee discount. Then I get to the end and see that you've already gone and bought one.
