Default Hard drive died

My Dell Latitude C600 laptop needs a new hard drive. It lools like I can get one for around $60. I'm not sure which one I should get. Is there a prefferred manufacturer for these things? Is it worth doing this, or will something else blow out in a couple of weeks?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to by a new Mac lap top. I have had many PCs and I am sick of them. Should I even bother fixing this thing? What if I was going to give it to my son? Think it will stand up?

One thought was that I would fix the old Dell and use it at the house as a "guest" computer so that when folks come to visit and want to use a computer I could let them use this and not have the screw up my new computer.

Thoughts from the computer literate?

nothing for nothing BUT unless you're a graphic artist why use a mac when 99% of the programs you use are windows based ie word / excel / outlook

spend $600.00 and get yourself a decent laptop

I would also stay away from Dell based on personal experience.

I don't really buy programs Steve and I am tired of having a computer that I cannot really operate well. Everyone I know who has a Mac says they are great and very intuitive. The models available now can easily be partitioned so that one side runs windows and the other side runs Mac OS. If you really need to run the computer in a Windows environment you can.

I could just buy a low price PC lap top, but it would just suck like all the other PC lap tops, so why spend half the money on something that sucks? Sorry if you love Windows, but I never drank the Bill Gates Kool Aide that turns your mind into the sort of rat's nest you need to figure out how the Windows system functions. I need point no further than the moronic "Start" button that you need to click to turn your computer off. My regular brain thinks normal and normal-think doesn't really work in Windows.

I never really learned Windows so I'm happy to learn something that is easier to use.

is this the one in your home office?

if so time to retire it

remember if the hard drive is gone - you'll lose everything on the old one and you'll need all the programs that were on it

one other thing bill - if you have problems with the mac - not many folks could help you out ie you couldn't call and say "bass come quick my mac is smoking" whereas if you have a pc, i could come over and smoke with your pc

If all you're using the laptop for is email, web surfing, and occasional Word or Excel then the MAC will work just fine. Plus it is so easy to use for managing pics and music. My wife's been using MAC's for over 15 years, I think my next computer will be a MAC too.
