Maybe the rules should change. Weren't they created over name calling not issue discussion.

I vote for new rules (noting I'm a paying member) I'd also like new moderators. It's hard for them not to be subjective on issues, I understand that. I know I'm entitled to my opinion and repression is not a solution. It never was.

There are some folks in here I enjoy reading about so I wander through. That's why I come back.

I'd like to be able to carry on an adult issue oriented conversation in this forum. The only rule this forum needs is no name calling (Bush is stupid, Bill's a pervert and Obama's a terrorist).

Call names and your post is deleted. Otherwise let the discussion go on.

I happen to agree with most everything you've said.
You are correct. The rules were created over name calling. Moderators really can't be expected to determine what is political and what is not, and I don't think we want them to be in the censorship business. So the Politics subforum is the place where those threads which lean political should go. I do agree with Rob that threads tend to die when they go there. There is a large difference in postings when the threads are in the main forum versus the Politics subforum. But we came up with that subforum a long time ago, and it has served a purpose, whether you agree with the purpose or not. It is a shame that a post is made intentionally knowing that it is political and will kill a thread in the main forum.

^^^ Grant and Rob are probably right about wanting new moderator(s). In fact, one Vintage moderator is newly assigned this year. The other has been around a good while and could easily be replaced. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't mind moving on. I will see what I can do.

Given the subject matter on those two threads, I'm not surprised, even if folks tried to talk around the politics.

Trust me, as a former CO I know what a PIA trying to oversee threads can be. I got my share of PMs from people who weren't happy if I moved a thread, etc. dumped or thread or did whatever I thought I needed to do to keep the peace. I didn't last long as CO, neither did a few others. This was a rough place for a while and being CO wasn't worth the grief we were getting from certain members.

Not to make a Mod's job more difficult, but in this instance, is there a reason the maps thread could not been cleaned up and brought back? If those who make posts that leaned political are calling the removal of such posts censorship, in any thread, get over it. You are often essentially killing a thread.

I don't have an issue with the politics sub-forum after seeing some of the nastiness in some of the previous threads. I think that ship has sailed. I don't see politics being discussed in the main forum.

I'm here for the lighter side of life, I don't care to get into political discussions, even if I were a paid member. Any thread that gets dumped there is dead for me, and for others who have decided for their own reasons not to be paid members.

I don't know Jerry. I come back here to look at threads and they are gone. I'm a guest so I can't find out.

We all, well most of us, know he does a great job. Don't put any ideas in his head. We need him.

I think it was the 'jerk' that started it. I made reference to Michign's wolves on the ballot - nothing to do with R's or D's but just about the $ spent by both sides. Seems mentioning the state was pushing the limit.... or something like that. Doesn't bother me and I respect what the mod's have to do. No big deal.

^^^ Personally, I don't consider moving a thread to the Vintage Politics Subforum from main Vintage to be a negative statement about the thread -- at all. If such a thread "dies" then it is not the result of site structure, but rather involves individual members' decisions not to post or participate in any thread that is in the Politics Subforum. The S2ki site posting rules vvv also apply to statements about politics and religion that involve no name calling or aggressive behavior at all. What makes the rules easy to accept in Vintage is that we have been provided (by request) with a dedicated Vintage venue to allow mature mention and/or discussion of the 'facts' and opinions and views on the applications of synagogues churches, religions, governments, parties, impeachments, lobbying, Supreme Court judges, gerrymandering, financing campaigns -- or any of a multitude of other political matters, including our own personal preferences. So discussions about taxes, legislation, elections, candidates, party platforms, government spending, etc., etc. all belong in threads that get originally posted in "Politics". And if they were to be originally posted in "Politics" they would not have to be moved or redacted by the mods. And people would not get pissed, because the location or the content of their posts was called into question. The constant plaints about "that evil Politics Subforum" - graveyard of good threads - is counterproductive and can be quite destructive of the positive intent of the site; to provide a place for conversations, exchanges, and banter of all kinds - including politics and religion - to be enjoyed on the Vintage site. (As I understand it now, full participation in the site to include seeing the Politics Subforum requires - for whatever reason - a small annual membership fee - about the cost of a hamburger and a beer.) But, hey, the Politics Subforum is an integral part of Vintage.

And if you have no interest in the Vintage Politics venue, the solution cannot be to try to force acceptance of political or religious content into Main Vintage. That is against the site rules that your mods are required to enforce - whoever they may be.
