It seems like all the meds are directed towards RA, so I think I'm stuck with finding something to deal with pain and pushing myself to exercise a lot more. I need to lose 20 pounds but its next to impossible because I enjoy adult beverages too much.

No grogginess ever for me and I get up early.

Bill,
When you get insomnia, is it wake up a bunch of times or toss and turn for hours without getting close to sleep?

FYI for the sleep deprived. If it's pain keeping you awake, (as was my issue before shoulder surgeries) simple OTC sleep aids and pain relief may not work. I finally went to the doc and asked for prescription Ambien. Yes, I've heard the horror stories about it, and it's not recommended for long term, but if you NEED to sleep it's another option, And we ALL need to sleep. You gotta skip the booze when taking it, but it's something to consider. I felt much better able to deal with shoulder issues when I had a full night's sleep. I also used the Ambien after surgery. There were times I didn't feel I needed pain pills, but I needed sleep and since I had to sleep in a recliner, the Ambien worked quite well. My insurance company only allowed about 10 pills per month, but it's a cheap generic, so I just paid $ for the script.

Prescription sleep meds may also help your body get back to a sleep pattern that has been interrupted. They may be prescribed with more caution in the "elderly" crowd, but if you aren't sleeping due to pain, or other issues, don't rule it out.

It can be both but typically I wake up once, usually around 2:00 am, then toss and turn, and then get out of bed and go watch TV for a while. Around 4:00 am I'll get drowsy and go back to bed and sleep for a couple or three hours before I have to get up for work. I usually go to bed between 11:30 and 12:30 at night.

Watching TV might be too much brain stimulation. Try reading a boring legal brief. That should help you nod right off again!

Lainey, there is no such thing as a boring legal brief.

Does it relate to periods of stress at work or home?
or alternatively did you work out before going to bed?

In either case retirement might resolve some of those issues if it's not retirement you're worried about.

Bill, would you consider medical marijuana or are you concerned about your license to practice? I don't know the laws of MA.

No, not unless it was prescribed by a real doctor, as opposed to a prescription specialist.

I tried Walgreens sleep tablets last night. I slept 1.5 hours. Actually less than my normal these days of 2 to 2.5 hours.

I tried calling the State of Mich medical marijuana program, and so far have not been able to get through - reportedly due to high volume. Its my understanding 300k are on it in MI. Its also my understanding that if recreational passes today on the ballot, the state has a full year to install a process. I can't figure out if there are any real doctors that support the program. Looks like the prescription specialist are the only ones in this state because the ones I see listed are all in college towns like Ann Arbor and Lansing, or major cities.

I have an appointment to see a PA at an OA local clinic this Friday, even tho I already know they do not have anyone who sepcializes in back or hip issues.
