The Kindle
I laughed when I read my old post. I got a kindle for Christmas in '09. I never used it until my back injury happened in March of this year. IT WAS WONDERFUL. Over the period of several months I read book after book and never had to leave my bedroom or sunroom. Mine came from Amazon which offered loads of 99 cent books and many freebies. I read a good 75-80 books during my convalescence and reallllllly came to appreciate it. Now that I'm mobile the Kindle is rarely used, but it was a Godsend at the time.
PS, Lainey: The book opens to the last page you read. You do not have to mark it. If you're reading several books, the kindle remembers your last page read and you can even flip between books if you like.

I'm sure the kindle was quite convenient for you, Val. Less "stuff" is often a good thing. If the gadget budget were flush, I'd have a few more gadgets, maybe even a kindle would make it's way to me, but I'm not in a hurry.
I don't mind turning down the corners of a page in a book I'm reading.

I think that the Iphone also has book-reading capabilities, at nearly the same price.
Wow, for 99 cents a book, I might learn to like it! :-) I buy tons of used books, or look for the new buy 3, get one free (I think that's what amazon offers) and always buy enough to get free shipping.
This may sound like "Patronizing local/family businesses", but our local library has used book sales several times a year. Since I am a big believer of supporting our local library, I'd recommend people buy used books from their library instead of from Amazon. Of course, the selection of books is limited, but if you wait long enough, I'm sure you'll find the book you are looking for. And when you are done with your book, donate it to your local library.
I used to love to read books but no more, and I am not sure why.... eyes, attention span, sitting still that long, whatever. I have two books I really want to read - The art of racing in the rain and Toly's ghost - and they have been sitting on the shelf above my head for months and months. For some reason I just can not get interested. Strange too, since there is nothing good on tv most days.

^^ Another thing about the kindle that is nice is that you have a font selection and I can read it without using my reading glasses.

That is almost enough to make me order one!
glasses.

GRRRRR. I've finally got reading glasses in every place that I may even possibly think of needing them!! I even ordered some sunglass readers for those times when I want to read at the beach and keep a pair in my beach bag. I still realllllly enjoy a book and turning the pages of a book is much more sensual (
) than clicking a button on the kindle. There's just something reallllly comforting about a real live book. However, I don't need reading glasses with a kindle and I do need them with a book. Not everything is available on the electronic readers and there are many, many old books that may not be classics, but are worthy of reading that will never be available in the e-version.
