Lets have a Pro tour guide
Bill,
I'm reading this book now. I had a business trip last month to the Army war college in Carlisle, PA and had the privledge of joining a "staff ride" to gettysburg with some of the students. The ride was led by an instructor at the college who has been doing the tour for 20 years. It was clear to me that he had internalized the battle. He was able to give us a clear perspective of what was going on all over the battlefield at each stop. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Warning: Rob thinks that I'm an expert on the battle, but I'm a real neophyte compared to a serious Civil War student
SteveWould you like to become and official Vintage member, badge and all?
Send me a PM with some official info, DOB if you wish +1's name (because I forgot it) email address if you want. That info stays private.
I'll start a thread to welcome you. I haven't done that yet have I?
Brain is still mush from the busy Nor'Easter weekend?
No, I think October 7th is out of the question. I would interfere with the drive and the rest of the planning.
If a few of you are serious about hiring a guide it should be done on Sunday, October 8th, so as not to conflict with the rest of the meet.

I agree with Rob. With the drive schedule and stopping for lunch, setting aside a time for an actual guided tour may not work out.
Sunday would probably be a better day for that. Especially for those not heading home, it would give them a nice option of something to do.

There are locations where you can hire a licensed battlefield guide....I'm not sure that you even need an advance reservation. Maybe the 'book club' folks would especially enjoy this....on a sign-up basis on that thread?
If we're lucky on Saturday afternoon, we'll encounter some re-enactors at one or more of our stops during the 18 mile loop thru the battlefield. It roughly follows the course of the 3 day battle and I'll provide some overview
I have an e-mail into the folks at the Army War College that did the staff ride tour that I went on. I will let you know if it is possible to hire someone.
My guess is that you will need about 20 people to make this cost effective. It takes about 5 or 6 hours to complete the tour. I'm a bit worried that scheduling something like this on the day everyone is heading home is not workable.
