So, it's happening on my wife's birthday, in a location where my first and only grandson was born. Yeah, we'll be somewhere north of Nashville.

Damn! My reply went to the wrong place. I'm going to see it, too. I'll be flying to Denver and then driving north for the eclipse. It's the first item on my 3 item bucket list.

We'll be in Salem, OR near the far left in the path of totality. I need to be completely recovered from my fractured rib by the August 7 full moon, which is approximately the same brightness as a total solar eclipse, so I can take my scope/camera setup outside to shoot the moon and sun, get my shutter speeds down, and practice moving quickly in low light.

This eclipse sounds like a lot of work. Is it mandatory?

If you go far enough north in Alaska you can see the Aurora Borealis and scratch that one off. You need to do it in winter, though, when the viewing is best. Fairbanks is the spot.

I booked flights last night, to Denver for Friday to late Monday, the night after the eclipse. My son lives in Niwot, north of Denver so I figured I could most likely see him that weekend and drive 4 hours north to Casper, WY to see the total eclipse. I'm expecting a major traffic jam of like minded Denver-ites. There are no available hotels within 2 hours of Casper. To me it will be a bucket list, once-in-a lifetime event. I'm going to do my best to suck it up and go with the flow.

Gary (Skunkworks) are you going north?
