Proof read DNA sequences? OMG! That must be really hard work. How do you know you have the "right" sequence? Do you have to compare a given sequence against a master template side to side? I can underatand why you end up

Lainey might be on to something. Some of the time it is "fat fingers".

on the other hand, there are times when I just draw a blank on how to spell words that I use on a fairly regular basis. I think that it has probably happend to all of us. When you just get a brain cramp, or you type a word and for some reason, it just does not look right to you.

 

I'm a spelling snob. I was a competitive speller at one point in my academic life, and people that mix up lose and loose drive me nuts. When they write that someone is a looser, I go ballistic.

I apologize in advance if sometime in the future, I make fun of someone's spelling, but please learn the difference between lose and loose.

While you're at it - the difference between your and you're is useful as is the difference between there, their, and they're.

It's and its - well I just can't be anal about those words.

I know that sometime in the future, this post will come back to haunt me because I am a much worse typer than I am speller. Feel free to chastise me severely about the head and body if I ever use loose for lose however.

 

^ I'm a spelling nut, too. I was a language major and a writer/editor in a former life. Even now, I'm unofficial editor for my friends and coworkers. The English language has been massacred so often in recent times that it's a wonder anyone is still paying attention. You can thank instant messaging for alot of it, since everything is contracted ("ur" for "your" AND "you're").

 

Years ago we played many games of trivia with my sisters, spouses, friends, etc.

One of the games had about 10 different categories. Sometimes we didn't play exactly according to the rules. We'd play ladies against the men, and we'd alternate selecting the categories we would use during the game.

The guys always made sure sports was among the categories, the ladies would chose spelling/grammar.

Our strategy often worked. If the guys were close to winning and we would select the category for the FINAL question, we'd give them a spelling question. Very often the game would have to continue. Of course the same thing would happen if we were given a sports question.

So I guess my question is, " Are girls better spellers than boys?"
