Default Mouse or mole?

While watching the birds feeding yesterday, Rick noticed a little darker gray critter that came out from under the deck and it was sticking his head up from the pile of snow. It made little holes/tunnels in the snow.

We aren't sure if this is a mouse or a mole. If it's a mouse, we don't want it in the house, and I don't think we want a mole either.

I've read that mouse poison, D con does not work on moles. I know dlq/Dave had a mole battle.

Looking for suggestions of things to try.

#1 will probably be not to scatter bird seed on the ground too close to the house.

Tht could work, but she is an indoor kitty. Don't want her to kill/eat vermin.

Oh, my indoor pals will still kill vermin after torturing them for a while. They are not big on eating them, though -- at least not a as far as I know.

My guess is a mouse. Every few years we see one tunneling in the snow. No big deal unless they have found a way into the house. Set a couple traps inside near the foundation area by the deck to be sure they are not inside.

They like to leave little "gifts" for the folks that feed them. I live on a creek, and we do get the occasional varmint, but the trusty feline sentries like to "play" them to death.

Thanks, all.

I'll pick up a couple traps. We have a basement window which will give us easy access to under the deck/near foundation.

I would think if any mouse made it's way in, Thelma would do it in. Judging by her reaction to the birds, I think she'd actually be a good hunter.

What about a rat? Rats are smart and harder to trap than mice. Ask me how I know.
