Thumbs up MRI

I had an MRI of my shoulder today. First MRI ever. I was dreading the whole thing. I do not like close, confined spaces. Also I had to have some dye shot into the shoulder first. None of this was high on my list of things to do, but it had to be done.

I did ask for and received some valium to take prior to the test, I guess it took the edge off.

I made it through the tests OK. Headphones with classic rock playing was a good distraction while having the MRI .I had a hard time keeping my breathing even, trying not to move, (a few pictures came out fuzzy), so I let them know I need to take a few good breaths between images, and that worked.

I'll know more of what is going on next week.

So, who has had an MRI and was it an issue for you?

By the way, it's so noisy in there I don't know how anyone could almost fall asleep!

I've had 3: 1 of my lower back, 2 of the knees. I wish I were allowed to fall asleep, but then I'd probably move during the scan. The noise doesn't bother me, I still have to fight hard not to drift off. I just stare at anything in view and cogitate on the mysteries of the universe.

What's in view, besides the ceiling of the MRI tube which is about 6" from your face?

That's it. There's usually some sort of scratch or bolt I can stare at while the mysteries dance through my noggin.

I cannot vote since I've never had one and know almost nothing about them. If I were in need of one, I suppose I'd ask my physician about details but I doubt I'd have to be sedated to manage being in a closed space. It would all depend on the reasons for it I suppose.

It's a real close space. Coffin like... If you have any thought that you may be claustrophobic, a little something to keep you from getting anxious can help.

They do have open MRI's, but from what I heard, the images are not as good as with the closed MRI's, not sure if that is true or not.

I've never had one either. I usually ask for Valium for a chest X-ray though.

It's a piece of cake. Just lie back, relax, and think good thoughts.

Two back, 1 shoulder, 1 elbow, I really hate the cigar tube, but I can get through it.
