I think you're probably right but I'm hoping that the syncros are somehow involved. There are known problems with the syncros and if they're involved I have a better chance of getting Honda to pay.

they can do a pretty good job of it if they break up and jam into things.

although it sounds like an apocalyptic breakdown.

before they did anything did the dealer pop the tranny Drain plug and look for metal fragments?

I just got a call from my Honda dealer. The transmission needs two new gearsets, second and third, and four new forks. Honda is splitting the cost of the transmission repair with me. At this point the repair will cost me just under $3,000 (including tax). That price is for the clutch which I have to pay for in full, and 1/2 of the transmission repair.

The transmission parts are in Ohio and are being trucked in. I'm supposed to get the car back on Friday. In the mean time, I still have the loaner.

I'm starting to think that I've kept the car 1 year too long.

To be continued.........

Rob, are you really that hard on equipment or do you think the tranny was weak? I'd be if it was a car I owned.

When the differential went out on my '05 S2000 Suzuka baby, Honda paid for a new one. The car was 4 months shy of 3 years-old, although it had 53,647 miles on it.

Sounds like there is a known problem with these transmissions. Here is some highlights of TSB 08-020 issued April 12, 2008.

From the TSB:

Transmission Grinds When Shifting Into 3rd Gear, Pops Out of 3rd Gear, or
Is Hard to Shift Into 3rd Gear

SYMPTOM
The 6-speed manual transmission grinds when shifting
into 3rd gear, pops out of 3rd gear, or is hard to shift
into 3rd gear.
NOTE: These symptoms can be intermittent and
sometimes more noticeable in colder climates.

PROBABLE CAUSE
The transmission has a faulty 3rd gear synchronizer or
3-4 shift sleeve.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the 3rd gear set.

VEHICLES AFFECTED
2003–07 Accord V6 with M/T: ALL
2008 Accord V6 with M/T 2-Door: From VIN 1HGCS218.8A000001 thru 1HGCS218.8A003478

Having changed both of those things on my MG, I know how labor intense it can be from start to finish. I'd say you did pretty good.

I do tend to be hard on the car, and as I've said, two sons learned to drive manual on the car and one son learned to drive on it. I'm not so much upset about the clutch, but I never expected the transmission to go with so little milage on it.

I really think the problem is with the build of the transmission.

This is exactly what we brought to Honda. I'm convinced that the transmission has major problems. If not I'm sure Honda wouldn't have split the cost with me.

Dave,

I have mixed feelings. I don't think that Honda is trying to take advantage of me with the price, but I do think the transmission should never have broken in the first place. As I said, I can accept the clutch, but there should have been much more life in the transmission. Once upon a time 78,000 miles was nothing for a Honda.

78,000 miles sounds like one of Chrysler's mini vans Automation transmissions issues of the 90's ... not a honda manual transmission.
