Default New computer

All the old computer threads dealt with issues, so I thought I would start a fresh one.

My old faithful iMac was dying, likely a hard drive crash. In its place I ordered an Apple Mac Mini with Apple's new M1 chip. Oh my goodness it is blazingly fast! I bought a 27" LG 4k ultra high definition monitor to go with it. The colors and resolution are tops. Zero background screen reflection - which was an issue my old iMac. It's been 12 years since I transferred data from one machine to another, so I was not sure what to expect. It was totally flawless using Apple's Time Machine backup.

I am attempting to save and reuse my old machine. My plan was to initiate a recovery operation and reinstall the Mac operating software that came with it initially. My first attempt failed, no doubt due to the bad hard drive. For my next attempt I thought I would do the same thing only install it on an external 1TB drive. I had an extra one but it was 98% full so I wanted to erase that data. To erase it you choice from 1 to 7 passes. The more passes the more secure you are everything has been erased. I picked 7. After three hours it was still on pass 1. Oops, better research how long this will take. A poster said it took 19 hours to erase one-half of the data I have. Still worth the wait if I can reuse the old machine.

Believe it or not I am still using a generation "1" iPad that is over 20 years old and Apple stopped supporting it at least 15 years ago. Nothing works on it but the screen and messaging. When I find a subject online I think I would like to oil paint, I copy it and send it via messaging to the iPad in my paint room. I am hoping to do the same, if not more, with the old iMac.

Anyone else bought a new computer lately or are planning on it?

I had AdBlock on my old machine. I haven't activated on my new machine yet. I was wondering if anyone had a blocker they really like. Since this new machine is so fast I get slammed with ads before I can blink, so I have to do something to stop that.

I run AdBlock and it works well, especially with YouTube ads. Best one I've found. Why are you thinking about going with something else?

Probably because I thought it was one of the reasons my old machine was running slow. Good to hear you like it.

2023 will see a new PC in the house, unless the current one gives out sooner. My current one is from 2013 and it bogs down whenever I'm working with my pics. I'm sure something newer will have a better processor, memory, etc.
Haven't started research quite yet.

Dave, I still use Ad Block.

Have fun with your new computer. Hope you can get the old one up and running.

I will more than likely replace my Apple Mini before long. Mine is getting slower and iso getting older.

Dave, is there room in the new mini to add a second hard drive?

Scoots, I got extra memory and extra storage, so I ended up with this:

8 core CPU (central processing unit)

8 core GPU (graphic processing unit)

16 core RAM (random access memory)

512 GB SSD Storage (solid state digital)

Power and ports in order:

power button - power cord - Ethernet port - two USB 4 / thunderbolt ports [I run one to the USB-C on the monitor], one HDMI port, two USB-A ports, headphone port

That's it. Basically a 8x8x1 box. With the limited ports I have a USB hub attached which can handle additional external hard drives.

No but you can get a 2Tb drive. I had a mini for a while, I used a 16Tb NAS with it as the main storage and the internal drive as temporary storage and applications. I also maxed out the memory which is 16Gb. I traded it for a MacBook Pro Max with 64Gg of memory and a 1 Tb hard drive because I use some pretty memory intensive programs.

My current Mini Mac has 2 - 1Tb drives and 16Gb of memory. Something makes me think that I added the additional memory.

I also have a 4Tb external drive.

It is just amazing about the prices of storage devices these days. I remember in the early 90's when a 1 TB external drive had a dealer cost of $1200 on Igram Micro. The other day I had a 32 GB Micro SD card for my dash cam crash, I went to Micro Center and found them for $4.99
