Default Nikon D 60

Thinking about getting a Nikon D 60, my older one is aging. Can anyone give me some advice on this camera ?

Get a D40 instead, and use the difference to buy the 18-200 VR lens.

The D40 will do everything most of us need, and do it superbly. The real 'step-up' in the Nikon line is the D90, not the D60...

With a D40 and that lens, you will have 95% of all shooting situations covered in a compact, easy to use package.

I have a D80 and the wife has a D50. We've both been wanting D40s.

But don't just take my word for it - read what an unbiased pro has to say here:

I don't know what a D40 cost. Just picked a D90 up...just like brand new for $400.
Some stuff had never been opened.

My kid works for a natl pawn shop company, he says cameras are everywhere cheap right now.

Now we just need to figure out how to use it.

There's a real good D90 instruction manual, written for the amature, on the Ken Rockwell site I posted above. That's a GREAT price on the D90.

I think you can go to Nikon's web site and download a PDF version
of that manual.

We have the Nikon D70S, but we've had it awhile. I remember it was considered a very good camera when we bought it. I think we got the last one in the store.

Indeed, in its day the D70S was the best at its price point. Time and technology march on, however. One great thing about the Nikon and Canon systems is once you are in, upgrading the camera body is simple, your lenses are good to go.

I looked around, B&H, Beach camera, Abes, ect, I cant find a D 40 with a VR lens.
All the ones i looked at have a standard 18-55 mm lens. Whats the difference
between a VR and non VR lens ?

Get the camera body-only (minus the lens). Might also check Adorama - I've had great dealings with them.

or try here:

D40 Body Only

Buy the 18-200 VR lens separately.

Unfortuntaely, they are not kitted together.

VR stands for Vibration reduction, and it lets you shoot in about 3-4 stops less light that you could with a non-VR. So you don't need a tripod for those low-light situations. Really nice technology. On that Ken Rockwell site I linked above, this lens is one of his favorites of all time, and he goes into great detail about how it works.

Me, I just stick mine on the front of my camera, and off we go. Only been a few times I've ever used any of my other lenses. I love it!
