Default Not too fond of dolphins?

It appears Dean has company in his opinion of dolphins. "Others" avoid them as well. From MSNBC

Fish can eavesdrop on the calls of dolphins to avoid getting eaten, a new study suggests.

"Probably a lot of fish can do this," said lead researcher Luke Remage-Healey, a behavioral neuro-endocrinologist at University of California, Los Angeles.

A bottom-dwelling fish found off the coast of Florida called the gulf toadfish is prime prey for dolphins, which often listen to toadfish calls to find their targets. In fact, 80 percent of bottlenose dolphin diets containing sound-producing fish. But whether the toadfish peels its

Fill us in, Dean.
I have nothing against dolphins. It's the dolphin huggers that I find objectionable and worthy of derision.

It's not surprising to me that eighty percent of the dolphins' diet is sound producing fish. Dolphins are very adept at processing sound, thanks in part to their melons.
That some sound producing fish have adapted/evolved in response to this type of predation pressure isn't surprising either. There's a constant predator-prey "arms race" taking place.

What are those big toadfish eyes for? You'd think they could use those neurons better in their sound receptors!

Now, are we talking about dolphins or porpoises?

Not that anyone would make a mistake on porpoise, mind you.

We eat dolphins in these parts. Yum. HPH

The restaurants around here have changed the dolphins name to "Mahi Mahi" to pacify the porpoise huggers.

They need 'em to eat. They're lie-in-wait predators.
