note !. pumpkin pie filling has a much higher viscosity than it appears.
note 2. on a kitchenaid mixer, the controls are push away goes slower/stop
note 3. pulling towards you results in much higher beater speed than slow speed.
note 4 pumpkin batter has remarkable velocity and range leaving the mixing bowl at high speed.

I've done a similar incident with a Cuisinart hand mixer, how was I to know you're not supposed to leave it running when raising it out of a liquid! For being so small, it sounds like a 70 horsepower Evinrude motor when it clears the surface!

I dont attempt things like that, i would get in trouble.
