Default Peter, Paul & Mary on PBS

There is a special on PBS right now about the history of Peter, Paul & Mary. Do you remember them? I grew up with their music and still listen every now and again.

Its been a fine show so far. One of the surprises was seeing Ronnie Gilbert of the Weavers, Richie Havens and Tom Paxton.

Anyway, its midnight and you can probably catch the last 1/2 hour of the show.

PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei,
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal PUFF
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff.

Oh! PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei,
PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail,
Jackie kept a lookout perch on PUFF's gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came,
Pirate ships would low'r their flags when PUFF roared out his name.

Oh! PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei,
PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant strings make way for other toys.
One great night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And PUFF that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow - green scales fell like rain,
PUFF no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his lifelong friend PUFF could not be brave
So PUFF that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave.

Oh! PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei,
PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.

Sorry I missed that one. I always enjoy seeing PP&M and Richie Havens knocks me out every time I see him. He wraps that big long thumb over top of his guitar neck and he's lucky if there are three strings intact when he's finished. Check out that thumb of Richie's.

Richie Havens' thumb

I'd almost agree with you about Puff being an innocent song, but why did they have to name him Jackie PAPER?

The show is still on here in WA, and my wife Ruth and I are enjoying it. We went to a Peter, Paul & Mary concert in the LA area in late '64/early '65. Their songs and style have been great for a long time.
