Default Pirates

I can't believe the way this is being handled. It seems completely idiotic to me.

They have 4 pirates and a captive Captain in a life boat that probably has provisions for 12 people for a month in it at best. The lifeboat's out of fuel.

The boat the pirates attacked is US registry and the Capt a US citizen.

Our response?

Lets send a million tons of destroyers frigates etc over there to help him.. It will only take a few days to get there. Isn't this kind of like shooting a mouse with an 18" gun off the Missouri?

Where were the jets that on a low flyby could have scared the shit out them? Where are the seals and their gunships or even a sub by now.

You can't tell me in the dark of night a seal team couldn't swim up to the boat, kill or disable the 4 pirates and rescue the Captain.

I can think of a bunch of ways to get them to surrender the Captain or die.

Then there's a discussion going out there on "What do we do with Pirates when we catch them?"

The same thing we've done since the nation was founded. Kill Them! Hang them from the yardarms. But no instead let's settle them in Oklahoma..cmon....

The way this is being handled is absurd, ridiculously expensive and in my opinion. STUPID.

The Capt actually escaped and jumped overboard last night, and the on-scene US Navy failed to react. The pirates recaptured him and I'm sure now he is tied/chained to something.

My guess would be that the CO of the destroyer had orders from DC not to take any action. I would have blown the pirates and lifeboat to tiny bits of flotsam the second the Captain cleared the rail.

With the FBI, State Dept. etc etc involved I'm sure the on-scene commander isn't allowed to do ANYTHING without making 10 phone calls and then verifying in writing via email that he could take action after several hours of high-level meetings.

I'm guessing that the captain may have caught the navy off guard as well when he jumped overboard.

Even though they have a large vessel there, I'm guessing it's not 50 yards away.
snipers aren't much good on a rolling ship and a bouncing target.
the life boat is also the closed variety which limits the ability to board or upset the boat.

The Navy doesn't even need to hit the target--just a few warning shots by a .50 caliber and I think four sets of arms would be shooting skyward.

What is the maritime term for a cluster****?

I believe I read that there are provisions on board for 10 days. In any event, too many cooks are spoiling the broth! The U.S. just doesn't operate the way the Israelis, do, for instance. They don't care what the world thinks. They just get the job done!

Why can't the US just lob tear gas canisters when the pirates open up a hatch or window?

That 4 pirates can hold the entire US Navy at bay is somewhat ludicrous.
