A Spinner dolphin? In my yellow car ???? No, that's Jerry!!!!

I must be dumb ....

Actually I was so busy taking the photo at the time, that I didn't notice if there was any commentary on the type of dolphin. My camera has an annoying lag from shutter press to picture taking, so I took about 20 pics before finally getting this one. Spinners are not a type of dolphin found down here as far as I know, but I'm not an expert. Sigh!

Bwahahahahahaha!!

Penguin, sounds like you were a wonderfully gracious host. I'm really glad Jerry and Kathy got to go to your neck of the woods. NZ and OZ are definitely on my list!
I had a great time! I've said to Jerry that I'm happy to play host again to any of you (actually, I suggested he filter applications so I only get the nice people, but he said that you were all nice, then thought there could be a few exceptions, then said ... oops, sorry Jerry).

Jerry's got lots of pictures. As soon as he learns to turn the camera on, he'll probably start posting them.

And don't let him drive your cars until he's worked out where the wing mirrors are again

Why didn't you keep him?
I had to throw him back: not allowed to keep wildlife

Thanks, you're correct. You folks have the Dusky and Hawaii has the Spinner. They're both acrobatic swimmers, so I can never keep the two straight.
You folks also have the smallest dolphin species - Hector's dolphin - in the world as I recall.
I still wish I could find my glasses to see the one in the picture, but I think I left them at work.

I've treated some Hector's Dolphins, so hopefully would recognise one, plus they aren't found in the Milford Sound where this picture was taken. The Dusky Dolphin also doesn't go that far south.
So by a clever process of deduction, this is most likely a Common Dolphin. There was a pod of around 5 or 6 swimming around the boats as we made our way to the ocean end of the fiord.
Any other takers?

It couldn't be a Hector's as the dorsal fin is the wrong shape.
Even though I still haven't found my glasses, I've learned something about dolphin distribution in NZ thanks to you. I have a friend who studies dolphin behavior along your coast. I'm going to email him to see if I can impress him with my newfound knowledge.

Jerry & Kathy may have some clues having just done this boat trip. They may well have heard the commentary, especially as they had a lot longer in Doubtful Soound then I did.

Any sign of them yet?
