Saddam and his henchmen and women remind me of Hitler and Hirohito and their henchmen and women. Splintered at best but lethal. At this point they are figure heads only. Insane and out of touch. The cancer goes much deeper and it is terminal. I believe this is a giant step forward but it's far from over.
Yes this is good for confidence, moral and the markets until (God forbid) there is another terrorist event. The only answer at that point is to hit them hard in response. 10 fold hard as they hit us. Even after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese refused to surrender. 7 additional atomic bombings were planned cutting a path to Tokyo for ground troops. When I think about it, did WWl or WWll ever really end? To be continued?
This is war and there is nothing pretty about it. Regardless of who or why, it's here and it's either win or lose. There is so much we don't know. I pray for enlightenment and a swift end to the conflict.

Many of us think that Saddam's capture won't make much difference. Many disagree. For those of you who disagree, here is a quote directly from an article in today's New York Times concerning the capture. (I will also link to the article).

"Athough some of the anti-American fighters could now be demoralized, experts on insurgency and terrorism said many would likely carry on the war, especially since the fighters seem to be organized in cells rather than under a central authority."

Here is a link to the article.

Rob,

Indeed our freedoms are what our men and women in uniform protect.

As for my sarcastic comment about the Left Coast, I'll just paraphrase an old adage about my having fought to defend your right (and mine) to speak your mind... just doesn't mean I have to agree or applaud others. That and frankly 9-11 left a deep indelible mark personally which has left me feeling rather cold to those who would minimize efforts against terrorism and the victories that are so hard won. I don't really see that here... but like I said, the overall tone of the thread really bothered me. The notion that Saddam's capture is really no biggie in the grand scope of things is a view I have a hard time comprehending.

Sorry if you felt insulted... not my intent.

--Bob

PS Quoting the NY Times or LA press simply provides a liberal view. Obviously that is not a view I embrace -

Bob, you and I agree completely and thank you for your service to our country. There are many who often forget why we are there and it's not b/c of some conspiracy theory to revenge for his dad, oil money, big corp. kickbacks etc, those are all diversions and just flat out assumptions with no bases in fact.

I think people forget our militiary is not trained to bake cookies... they are trained to kill and go into combat laying their life on the line to defend the people of America and those who stand for what we believe in, freedom and democray for all.

BTW, when are we going to take Henry Kissenger into custody for his war crimes in Cambodia?

Speaking of war crimes - there is ample evidence the Emporor tried to surrender before the 2nd atom bomb was detonated. The effort was rebuffed by Truman.

IMO the second atom bomb was in large part a message to the USSR...
