Selling vinyl records
#11
When we moved two years ago we had a garage sale and advertised we had vinyl records. People showed up two days prior to the sale wanting to look at them. Surprising demand. If you have lots of time look at Ebay. Some of these go for what I consider stupid prices.

I keep waiting for Gene to jump into this conversation.

Seeing the pre-sale interest we priced some old rock LPs such as Beatles at $5 45s for $1 and they were snapped up fast. If folks thought they were overpriced I just told them to come back the 3d day of the sale and make an offer. None of the $5 LPs were left. Others we ended up giving to Good Will or the Salivation Army.

Local(ish) to Lewes DE but I'm not sure they purchase from collectors. Sounds like they buy out old record shop for their inventory.

I had a former co-worker retire 2 years ago.
As part of his downsizing, he brought them to a record store in Boston who bought the collection for a buck each.

We had a garage sale with a neighbor a few years ago. Between us we had 300+ LPs of 60s/70s and 80s rock. All in near pristine condition. The sale was advertised and we had two collectors/resellers come through as soon as we opened. I think we sold about 6. The rest went to Goodwill.

A few weeks ago I stopped into a local used vinyl record shop in one of the malls near me. I don't have any, I gave away all of my 45s, 33s, and 78 rpm records 20 years ago when we moved out of the city. In any event, in the course of the discussion, I asked the dealer if he buys any. He does but pays virtually nothing for them. The thing that most interests him when he does buy is the covers. The records are worth slightly more (not much more) if they have the original covers and the covers are in good shape. I didn't go into the details with him about what he'd pay but from the tone of the conversation, you'd probably be better off finding someone who loves old music and wants the vinyl and just give the records to them. At least you'd get their gratitude, you won't get much money selling them.
While talking to him I mentioned that I used to collect old jazz and blues 78 rpm records. In the 60s and 70s you could find all you wanted at flea markets and buy them for 25 cents each. If you bought more than one, you could get them even cheaper. Both he and I love the artists like Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald and etc., but the 78 rpm records are worth virtually nothing except as a curosity.
